Job Summary
The Medication Administration Trainer is responsible for providing training, observation, and support to unlicensed staff at Woods Services and other Woods System of Care affiliates to properly administer medications to individuals who receive our services.
- Must successfully complete the Department of Public Welfare/Office of Developmental Program (DPW/ODP) Medication Administration Train the Trainer certification program and maintain active Medication Administration Trainer certification through DPW/ODP at all times.
- Responsible for all duties as outlined in the Trainer Manual including observation, reporting, and completion of all documentation as required by DPW/ODP.
- Instructs unlicensed staff on how to properly administer medications as defined in the DPW/ODP Medication Administration Manual.
- Collaborates with others in the Training Department and Residential Programs to ensure employees working in applicable programs successfully complete the DPW/ODP medication administration course.
- Instructs on Woods specific policies and procedures related to medication administration, as well as use of the electronic MAR system, reordering of medications, and proper reporting of medication errors.
- Conducts and documents observation of medication administration by trainees completing their initial medication administration training.
- Conducts and documents, on existing skill sheets, annual practicum observations.
- Observes and monitors unlicensed staff as defined in the regulations by DPW/ODP.
- Assists the Lead Medication Administration Trainer and Training Manager in maintaining all medication administration training records.
- Provides feedback to management about issues raised concerning policy and procedures related to medication administration and about specific areas of difficulty observed with regard to staff performance.
- Participates in Woods Services QI process around medication administration to help identify systemic issues.
- Completes 40 hours of training annually, including fire safety, bloodborne pathogens, behavior management, passive restraints, Ukeru, and other required topics. Must maintain CPR, First Aid, AED certification at all times.
- Administers medications as MTS when needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Training Manager, Training Director, or their designee.
Education
A High school diploma and 12 college credits, plus 2 years experience working with individuals with I/DD; or High school diploma, plus 5 years experience working with individuals with I/DD.
Experience
- Must be employed by Woods Services or another eligible licensed setting for at least six months. Familiarity with Woods policies and procedures for Medication Administration is preferred. Must have previous experience with ODP Medication Administration training. Current Medication Administration certification strongly preferred. If not already certified, must successfully complete the DPW/ODP Medication Administration course and Medication Administration Train the Trainer Course as outlined by the PA Department of Public Welfare Office of Developmental Programs, within 6 months of hire. Upon successful completion of DPW/ODP Medication Administration Train the Trainer Course, Medication Administration Trainer status must be maintained at all times.
- Must have exceptional verbal and written communication skills, presentation skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to coach and engage others. Must work well on teams, collaborate, and contribute positively in groups. Must be computer proficient.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, be agile, physically pursue clients on foot, physically restrain, bend, squat, stretch, reach, push up and stand for several hours at a time.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive to multiple work locations to perform observations. Must successfully complete Smith Driver Training or other approved driver training program if driving a Woods Services vehicle.
