Summary Description
The Group Fitness Instructor (“GFI”) is responsible for the preparation and instruction of assigned group exercise classes within Woodside protocols. The GFI must be passionate, self-motivated, effective, and a team player who emphasizes member service, program retention and club promotion. This individual must be an example of health and fitness and be professional in appearance. The GFI must work to motivate members to participate in classes that may include but are not limited to the following formats: active age, aquatic, barre, boxing, conditioning, flexibility, high intensity, indoor cycling, interval, Pilates mat, strength, toning, and yoga.
- Yoga applicants 300 RYT minimum required
Qualifications/Physical Functions
Duties / Responsibilities
• Develops, designs and creates new ideas, concepts and movements; prepares and memorizes routines while finding appropriate music to support the class type – develops and/or outlines alternative exercise (regressions) movements based on individual physical limitations when necessary
• Ensures all classes begin on time; must be flexible, detail-oriented, open to critique
and willing to work together with other instructors for the benefit of Woodside members and the Group Fitness Department and Woodside overall
• Adheres to class description and modifies intensity levels for participants when necessary – instructing participants on how to maintain exertion levels to maximum benefits from the exercise routines
• Maintains consistency for that class by keeping substitutions to an absolute minimum
• Provides a welcoming, inclusive and non-judgmental environment while also properly observing participants to assess their ability to keep up with the routines as the class progresses; helps to avoid injury
• Maintains clean, organized and visually appealing areas in and around all fitness & studio areas
• Abides by Woodside facility rules, policies and procedures and attends GFI training meetings as scheduled
• Communicates with Director of Group Fitness any equipment, subbing and skill set development needs
• Administers emergency first-aid, when necessary
Work / Physical Functions
• Maintains up-to-date technically and applies new knowledge from independent study, new experiences, other curriculum/workshops/certifications, and continuing education programs
• Works to quickly solve problems by analyzing and troubleshooting issues with fitness equipment, sound system, microphone headset, scheduling mix-ups and no-show instructors, etc.
• Works to develop and maintain cooperation among other staff
• Complies with Club’s employee handbook manual, departmental policies and procedures and with all applicable federal and state employment laws
• Completes all other duties as directed/assigned
