Position Title: Gr. K-4 Assistant Principal of Student Services
Reports to: School Principal _______________________________________________________________
Job Goal:
To assist in the administration of the elementary school and to support the school in meeting the individualized educational needs of each student in the school.
Requirements:
Masters Degree and some experience working as an administrator.
Principal/Assistant Principal – Grades PreK-6
Special Education Certification required.
Performance Monitoring/Evaluation:
- Acts as primary evaluator of assigned faculty members and completes all steps and requirements of the evaluation process.
- Assumes an active role in the supervision/evaluation of Special Education staff.
- Acts as a resource person to faculty and students.
- Assists in the orientation of new staff and the preparation for the opening and closing of school.
- Interviews prospective candidates for substitute positions and recommends acceptable candidates.
- Assists in the evaluation of the clerical staff.
- Assists the Principal in interviewing new staff members.
Administration:
- Assists the Principal in the general administration of the school and serves as Principal in the Principal’s absence.
- Assists in the preparation of the student and teacher handbooks.
- Serves as a member of the elementary school administrative team.
- Directs textbook and supplies requisitions, distribution and inventory.
- Cooperates in the conducting of safety inspections and safety drill activities.
- Supervises the preparation of state and federal reports as required.
- Represents the school at area meetings as assigned by the Principal.
- Attends all building team leadership meetings.
- Assists in the development of the elementary school budget, equipment recommendations and specifications.
- Approves and organizes all school assembly programs.
- Assists in the creation of the master schedule.
- Assists in the coordination of the building special education programs and services.
- Facilitates Special Education Team Meetings and completes corresponding paperwork
- Responsible for providing a link between the special education department and the special education staff with regard to legal mandates and the implementation of district policies, procedures and vision.
- Responsible for instructing and directing regular education staff regarding changes in Federal and State regulations and District procedures.
- Mentor and provide support for regular and special education staff in the area of disability awareness.
- With the help of the District Special Education Coordinator and Director of Special Education, review all individualized educational programs, assessments and required paperwork to assure accuracy and mandated timelines.
- Works with the special education department to ensure paperwork is sent to parents within the mandated time frame.
- Supervises assignment of substitute teachers.
- Performs all other tasks as assigned by the Principal and Administrator of Special Education and Student Services.
Students:
- Supervises conduct of students within the school and oversees disciplinary procedures, keeping accurate records of disciplinary actions of assigned students.
- Supervises the reporting and monitoring of student attendance and related waivers.
- Coordinates, schedules and facilitates team meetings and associated paperwork for students to develop appropriate educational plans.
- Monitors IEP and programmatic compliance within the building.
- Supervises the program of extra-curricular activities.
- Communicates with parents/guardians of assigned students regarding absences/waivers, etc.
Professionalism:
- Stays abreast of Educational Reform developments and changes in the educational law/regulations.
- Stays abreast of changes within federal mandates such as IDEA (PL 94-142) as they relate to special education and section 504.
- Stays abreast of curricular/co-curricular research and development.
- Keeps informed of new instructional practices.
- Promotes educational excellence at the Elementary School.
Human and Public Relations:
- Assists the Principal relative to public information and public relations.
- Manages parent communication and concerns as part of the IEP process.
- Attends meeting of the PTO on a bi-monthly basis or as required.
- Assists in preparation/presentation of school programs as school committee and other meetings.
