What are the responsibilities and job description for the High School/Middle School Head Cheer Coach position at Woodward High School?
Woodward High School seeks a cheerleading coach with exceptional communication, time management, organizational skills, and cheerleading background. Applicant will be willing to work with and encourage student athletes to pursue all areas of interest in High School extra curricular activities.
Responsibilities include:
- Coach in all areas including organizing, instructing, and safety of all cheerleaders in practices, competitions and while cheering/performing at games.
- Main goal: Preparing the team for the annual Regional and State competition as well as other competitions.
- Training program should emphasize both injury prevention and proper technique.
- Being at all practices, during school hours and other times (this includes in season and out of season practices)
- Helping transport cheerleaders to football, wrestling and basketball games/duals/tournaments and other events when necessary.
Also included are other relevant competitions as well as local appearances at community functions and athletic events. Will also work with staff members of other groups/teams to promote school spirit and sportsmanship, as well as academic excellence.
The coach provides guidance and is expected to assist the Head Coach in the following areas:
- Understand, communicate, and assist in ensuring cheerleader conformance with the team contract and Woodward High School Student Handbook.
- Work with administration on various aspects of managing the team including, but not limited to, practice times and locations, student eligibility, game performance schedules, and any other matters that affect scheduled cheer performances.
- Work with Booster President on any team issues, concerns, communications, or needs required to meet team objectives.
- Communicate regularly with the Booster President.
- Communicate regularly with cheerleaders regarding scheduling for games and practices, and uniforms, hair and makeup styles for performances.
- Demonstrate compassion and concern for the academic and physical well-being of team members.
- Be able to instruct and strengthen individual abilities through constructive teaching skills and positive reinforcement
- Lead by example and encourage good sportsmanship, self-confidence and self-discipline.
- Promote a fun, instructive atmosphere that encourages the members to consistently practice, perform, and represent the team in a positive and respectful manner
- Be prepared to transport/travel with the team to competitions, football games, basketball games, wrestling matches and other events.
- Typical year is:
- After tryouts in March/April, prepare new squad for Classic Bowl and summer camp
- Weight room and Summer conditioning program in summer months
- Regional/State competition in September
- Football/Basketball/Wrestling season runs through March
- Maintain a valid driver's license
- Have or be willing to obtain the following: Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries, Heat Illness Certification, Concussion management, Cardiac Arrest training , Safety training associated with Dance/Pom, AACCA Cheer Safety certification, CDL with passenger endorsement and membership in the Oklahoma Cheer Coaches Association as well as NCA/UCA. (some certifications are required to be renewed yearly)
