What are the responsibilities and job description for the River Ranger at the WRWC position at Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council?
The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) is seeking individuals with strong people skills and interest in working outdoors. River Rangers work with volunteer groups to maintain, preserve, and restore the Woonasquatucket river watershed. River Rangers are stewards of the Greenway, responsible for being the face of the WRWC, educating the community, and encouraging use of this beloved outdoor space. We enthusiastically encourage residents–especially Black, Latine and indigenous residents–of communities in the Woonasquatucket River watershed (Providence, North Providence, Johnston, Smithfield, North Smithfield, and Glocester) to apply.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Maintain the Greenway, parks, and natural spaces along the river;
- Capably operate equipment, following safety and maintenance procedures (18 );
- Work a non-standard work week (some evenings and weekends as scheduled);
- Develop and lead volunteer projects. Minimum qualifications:
- Maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Provide positive work or school references
- Knowledge of plants including their identification, maintenance, and installation
- Experience working as a crew leader of staff and/ or volunteers
- Skill operating equipment required for ground and turf maintenance (mowers, line trimmers, etc...)
- Comfortable driving large vehicles
- Able to communicate effectively and courteously
- Favorable criminal background check (BCI)
Compensation: $18-20/hr starting pay (depending on experience), 40 hrs-week, seasonal (season begins in April and typically ends late November)

The WRWC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage, support, and promote the restoration and preservation of the watershed as an environmental, recreational, cultural, and economic asset of the State of RI.
The Woonasquatucket River Greenway is a 7-mile urban trail that runs from Providence to Johnston. WRWC has worked to restore and create parks along the Greenway including Merino Park, the Woonasquatucket Adventure Park, Donigian Park, and Riverside Park. River Rangers work with local government, non-profit organizations, schools, businesses, churches, recreation centers, and the community to revitalize parks, maintain the Woonasquatucket River Greenway, and empower the watershed community through education and shared stewardship of our lands.

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift
- Weekends as needed
