Position: Seasonal Environmental Educator

The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) is seeking a Seasonal Environmental Educator to support all aspects of our educational and outreach programs.

WRWC enthusiastically encourages residents--especially Black, Latinx and indigenous residents--of communities in the Woonasquatucket River Watershed--Providence, North Providence, Johnston, Smithfield, North Smithfield and Glocester—to apply.

For over 10 years, the WRWC has delivered environmental educational programming to youth and adults in the effort to revitalize the Woonasquatucket River and its surrounding neighborhoods. Our program partners include cities and towns surrounding the Woonasquatucket River (North Smithfield, Glocester, Smithfield, North Providence, Johnston and Providence), the Providence After School Alliance (PASA), Kids Klub Inc., local community centers and non-profits, local K-12 schools, colleges and universities. All our educational programs on the lower river (in Johnston, North Providence and Providence) stem from a program called the “Dos and Don’ts of the Woonasquatucket River”, a public safety program developed in partnership with the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Our current after school educational programs include “Fun with the Woony” with Kids Klub Inc. and “River Adventurers” with PASA. Introduction of potential programs include: “River Adventurers” in more middle schools through PASA and “Environmental Leaders” through the MET high school.

The After School Environmental Educator will work in collaboration with the Education Director and WRWC staff to teach and improve upon our educational curricula and outreach materials to serve all of our watershed communities with meaningful programming. They will take the lead/co-run all our after school programs and assist with other programs when necessary.

The Seasonal Environmental Educator will:

 Teach various stations on field trips

 Lead a daytime summer camp

 Communicate effectively with teachers and partners to assure quality programming

 Assist with procurement, maintenance, and organization of all program supplies

 Assist with all aspects of the WRWC’s educational programming including:

 Curricula review, revision and expansion

 Create lesson plans as needed.

Qualifications:

 Courses taken in Education and/or Environmental Studies

 Be in pursuance of an educational or environmental career

 Must be passionate about the environment

 Must be enthusiastic and comfortable working with youth

 Competency in basic Microsoft Office applications

 Comfortable working with a diverse group of people

 Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 Excellent phone and people skills

 Provide at least two professional references

Preferred qualifications (not required):

 Written and oral Spanish language skills

 Experience with environmental or science education

 Experience leading educational lessons

 Experience presenting to large groups

 Experience working within a diverse community

Requirements: Dependable transportation to and from WRWC office and community sites.

Preferences: Preference will go to an individual who has lived and/or worked in the communities (North Smithfield, Glocester, Smithfield, North Providence, Johnston and Providence) and the Providence neighborhoods (Olneyville, Manton, Hartford, Valley, Silver Lake, Elmhurst, Smith Hill) that surround the Woonasquatucket River.

Details: Part Time. 6-24 hrs / week depending on programs. From April 21 st to August 15th.

Compensation: $17-19/hr depending on experience

El Educador Ambiental de Temporada:

 Enseñar varias estaciones en excursiones

 Ayudar con la adquisición, el mantenimiento y la organización de todos los suministros del programa

 Ayudar con todos los aspectos de la programación educativa de WRWC, incluyendo:

 Revisar y ampliación de los planes de estudio

 Crear planes de lecciones según sea necesario.

Calificaciones:

 Cursos tomados en Educación y/o Estudios Ambientales

 Estar en el seguimiento de una carrera educativa o ambiental

 Debe ser un apasionado del medio ambiente
