TITLE: Skills Development Writing/Reading Comprehension Academic Coach for Multicultural Affairs

General Statement of Duties: The Skills Development Writing/Reading Comprehension Academic Coach for Multicultural Affairs will primarily be responsible for administering student support as a Skills Development Academic Writing/Reading Comprehension Academic Coach for the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA). Skills Development writing/reading comprehension academic interventions include targeting students' literacy, fluency, study habits, time management skills, test-taking strategies, navigating systems, overall academic planning and goal setting, developing academic support engagement strategies and workshops, monitoring student academic learning, and addressing any academic challenges. The Office of Multicultural Affairs' mission is to increase access, retention, academic success, and graduation of our students who are from underrepresented backgrounds. In doing so, the incumbent will work with students from recruitment to the post-college experience, tracking students' progress using both qualitative and quantitative measurements.

Responsibilities:

1. Provides individual/small group reading comprehension, writing, and academic instruction to OMA students, emphasizing comprehension strategies, vocabulary development, language comprehension, phonemic awareness, decoding, sentence construction cohesion, reasoning, writing mechanics, and fluency.

2. Assist students in developing the reading skills necessary for college-level coursework, standardized testing, and professional advancement.

3. Responsible for conducting relevant and appropriate intake assessments of students' needs and building curriculum and student support services to integrate literacy support into students' needs and strengths.

4. Assist in designing and implementing literacy workshops and interventions within the Office of Multicultural Affairs to address the needs of multilingual learners and underrepresented student populations.

5. Coordinates and leads Skills Development Workshop during the A.I.D. Summer Program

6. Coordinates and offers student support to OMA Vision Project students and OMA students taking summer courses.

7. Responsible for creating OMA reading/writing guides, materials, and resources to aid student learning

8. Co-chair Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Breakfast Poetry Writing contest.

9. Collaborate with the OMA staff with university partners across divisions and the community to further develop, promote, and achieve program goals and objectives, including educational, multicultural student engagement, mentorship, co-curricular and leadership development opportunities inclusive of OMA Ambassadors, Women's Circle, Young Men's Group, First Generation Student Nation, Intercultural Student Alliance (ISA; formerly known as TWA), Women in STEM, and the Brotherhood-Sisterhood Leadership Conference.

10. Provide outreach to program participants, analyze data, and track student progress to tailor interventions and support student success.

11. Maintains accurate data, both qualitative and quantitative to measure the effectiveness of programming and to monitor students' progress; completes reports as necessary.

12. Assists the Director as necessary.

13. Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service-oriented behavior worthy of emulation by other staff and students.

14. Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.

15. Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action objectives.

16. Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:


Required Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree required

2. 3 or more years of related work experience teaching reading or literacy skills or a related field.

3. Experience with formal and informal reading and writing assessments

4. Experience working with multilingual learners and students from underrepresented backgrounds.

5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must be able to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and administration.

6. Experience working in higher education settings.

7. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with educational student development and literacy instruction and interventions.

8. Knowledge of higher education principles, practices, and procedures.

9. Demonstrated experience with educational, cultural, and recreational programming.

10. Availability to work some off hours, including some Saturdays.

1. Master's degree
