JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of sanitation trucks and to oversee the completion of assigned trash collection routes.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Drives sanitation trucks on determined routes to collect garbage.
- Operates garbage packer to compact garbage.
- Disposes of garbage at the landfill.
- Signs gas and landfill tickets and completes reports at the end of the day reflecting expenditures.
- Completes daily reports showing miles covered and the amount of trash collected.
- Reports new customers located on the route, road conditions, and residential requests or complaints to the office.
- Communicates problem areas with residents such as improper containers, correct set out time, proper location of garbage, etc. by means of a leaflet with problem circled.
- Communicates with the office while in the field by means of a smartphone reporting garbage spills and other reasons for failure to pick up garbage.
- Inspects vehicles prior to and after use to ensure proper operation.
- Assists in the year-round boom truck pick-up routes.
- Ensures the GPS system is operating properly and is always on during routes.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Loads compacter unit with garbage on assigned routes.
- Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
- Considerable knowledge of County streets, roads, and designated trash collection routes.
- Considerable knowledge of safety procedures and equipment required in driving and operating a sanitation truck and in trash collection.
- Good knowledge of maintenance requirements for sanitation trucks.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
- Ability to direct the work involved in trash route collection.
- Ability to attend work regularly and reliably.
- Skill in the operation of a sanitation truck and trash compacter unit.
- Skill in the operation of a smartphone.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to hear and speak sufficiently to communicate information in person and by telephone.
- Ability to lift 60 pounds and up to 80 pounds with assistance.
- Ability to step off and onto the back of a sanitation truck.
- Digital dexterity is necessary to move levers and depress switches in the operation of a compacter unit.
- Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of an elementary school that provides training in reading and writing; some experience driving a truck; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or be able to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
- This position is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing in compliance with the regulations of the US Department of Transportation.
- Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check, motor vehicle report, and a pre-employment, job-related physical.
- In addition to pre-employment checks, employees who operate county vehicles are required to undergo an annual motor vehicle report.
- Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
