Position Overview
The Youth Career Planner is dedicated to supporting youth and young adults at the Rochester Alternative Learning Center (ALC) as they explore career options, set educational and employment goals, and build their futures. In this role, you’ll provide one-on-one guidance, assist with career assessments, facilitate job readiness training, and connect students with workforce opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Career Planning & Coaching: Help students identify strengths, interests, and career pathways. Provide individualized career plans that include education, training, and employment options.
- Workforce Preparation: Assist youth with job search strategies, resume writing, interview skills, and workplace readiness.
- Case Management: Track student progress, provide consistent support, and ensure career plans align with individual needs.
- Community Collaboration: Build partnerships with schools, businesses, and community organizations to create opportunities for youth employment and skill development.
- Job Placement & Follow-Up: Assist students in securing work-based learning opportunities, apprenticeships, or employment and provide ongoing support.
- Program Outreach & Resources: Share information about workforce programs and connect students with valuable community resources.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience: Previous experience in career planning, education, workforce development, or youth services is highly preferred.
- Skills: Strong communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills. Comfortable working with diverse populations.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field is required. Equivalent experience may be considered.
- Tech Proficiency: Comfortable using computers and career planning tools.
- Bilingual skills are appreciated but not required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
A Day in the Life of a Youth Career Planner
8:00 AM – Start the Day: Check emails, review the day's schedule, and prepare materials for student meetings.
9:00 AM – One-on-One Career Counseling: Meet with a student to explore their career interests, discuss training options, and refine their job search plan.
10:30 AM – Resume & Interview Workshop: Lead a group session to help students develop strong resumes and practice interview techniques.
12:00 PM – Lunch Break
1:00 PM – Employer Outreach: Connect with local businesses about internship and job opportunities for students.
2:30 PM – Case Management & Reporting: Update student records, track progress, and complete follow-ups.
4:00 PM – Wrap Up: Plan for the next day, ensuring that students have access to the resources and support they need.
