The Role
A Designer partners with the sales team to offer creative expertise in space and product solutions that support a customer’s business needs. A Designer is able to work on projects of increasing complexity. May be guided by and/or provide production assistance to a Senior Designer. They have applicable knowledge of Herman Miller/ Knoll products and good knowledge of ancillary product selection and specification. Solid application of Design processes and procedures.
What You Will Do
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Client Collaboration & Design Development
- Partner with Sales Representatives to establish client design requirements, project goals, and direction.
- Develop and present design solutions, including space plans, fabric/finish palettes, furniture specifications, and installation drawings.
- Facilitate live design sessions with clients, translating needs into effective floor plans while offering alternative solutions that meet budget and functional requirements.
- Obtain client approval through graphic design presentations and maintain excellent client service by understanding and addressing underlying business needs.
Project Planning & Management
- Perform field measurements, product inventories, programming, specification verifications, and ancillary product research.
- Review and revise designs and specifications as required to meet project objectives.
- Manage project workloads of $1–5 million, ensuring deadlines are met while proactively assisting team members when capacity allows.
- Ensure designs comply with building codes and other regulations.
- Accurately quote design time and articulate the impact of additional requests on project schedules and costs.
Technical Expertise
- Create specifications using CAP, AutoCAD, and CET tools.
- Gather information from vendors and utilize planning guides, price books, and tagging systems to ensure accurate specifications and documentation.
- Apply knowledge of Herman Miller/Knoll furniture systems, seating options, ancillary lines, and fabric vendors to deliver innovative solutions.
- Push the boundaries of standard product applications and explore creative options.
Communication & Collaboration
- Present ideas effectively in formal and informal settings, ensuring clarity and mutual understanding.
- Keep managers and team members informed by sharing accurate and timely information verbally and in writing.
- Collaborate with clients, vendors, and team members to resolve problems, evaluate solutions, and maintain project consistency.
Quality Control & Documentation
- Perform double-checks of project details for quality assurance and document revisions thoroughly.
- Adhere to design drawing and documentation standards, including electronic file naming and saving conventions.
- Update project records to reflect last-minute changes and maintain accurate documentation of all revisions.
Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Demonstrate a high-performance ethic through constant self-improvement and successful behaviors.
- Transition efficiently between tasks, maintain focus on priorities, and meet cost and timeline goals.
- Seek guidance and training from senior designers and managers as needed.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Enter time worked into the timesheet system weekly.
- Maintain up-to-date records and documentation for all assigned projects.
EXPERIENCE AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrates technical credibility and professional proficiency, having depth of judgment, knowledge and technical skill important for the position.
- Proficient with working with a client/A&D firm to determine the client's needs and translate those needs into a floor plan; initiating creative ideas for alternative solutions, identifying the client's actual needs and giving them the best possible options.
- Adept in the design process to organize workflow.
- Demonstrates client focus by providing excellent service and satisfaction to both internal and external clients; understanding the client's business issues and/or seeks information about the real, underlying needs of the client beyond those initially expressed.
- Exhibits an understanding of a variety of office furniture systems and seating vocabulary as well as ancillary lines and fabric vendors.
- Proven to consistently and accurately apply design drawing and documentation standards.
- Successfully manages workload by being able to transition easily between tasks, responding quickly and efficiently to work requests, handling competing priorities and urgent situations, making sound decisions within short timeframes and taking appropriate action.
- Possess solid time management skills, being able to allocate time for planning and assigning priorities to tasks in an efficient manner.
- Able to effectively problem solve by identifying the existence and probable cause of a problem; brainstorm potential solutions and collaborate with key people involved in evaluating solutions to the problem.
- Effective communicator verbally and in written form, in both formal in informal situations as well as demonstrates the ability to listen well to others and clarify the message to ensure understanding.
- Demonstrates detail orientation and understands the importance of doing quality work and adhering to the standards to prevent errors.
- The Designer is proficient in the following technology applications:
- Auto CAD
- 20 – 20 CAP
- CET
WORK CONTEXT
The position requires working typically in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as office phone/smartphone, computer/laptop/computer keyboard/mouse, photocopiers, filing cabinets and printers. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Ability to visit and move around at construction and other customer/work sites, wearing appropriate safety protective gear. Ability to lift, carry, and otherwise transport work-related materials that frequently weigh up to 10 lbs. and that may occasionally weigh in excess of 25 lbs. Ability to work with numbers, research complex issues and resolve problems. Requires more advanced mathematical skills in order to understand spatial requirements and in doing bids. Must be able to read and comprehend complex written material, as well as ability to analyze, compare, evaluate, reconcile, and order data.
