Are you interested in book design and layout? We offer custom book covers, professionally formatted interiors, eBook conversion, and other services that authors need to navigate the process of self-publishing.
We are a small, friendly team seeking a Junior Graphic Designer to support our in-house design department.
We understand that book design is a niche market in the world of design so we do not expect that you will necessarily know how to lay out a book, however if you know InDesign, we will train you in our particular application of it. This is a great opportunity for a burgeoning graphic designer looking for experience in their field!
Compensation:
Starting at $18/hr
Hours/week:
20 hours to start, but this could turn into a full-time position for the right candidate within 6 months. Monday - Friday 10am - 4pm in office.
This is a 6-month opening with potential option to stay on and move to full time.
Duties/Responsibilities
As a Junior Designer, your primary role will be to assist with production-related tasks:
' Prepare manuscripts in Microsoft Word for placement in InDesign
' Place manuscripts in InDesign and apply basic styles
' Implement text edits provided by editors and clients in InDesign
' Cover design
' Interior layout
' eBook creation
' Preparation of print files
' Processing author photo submissions/scans for use in print using Photoshop.
' Generating image exports and 3D renderings of author covers/using the pre-recorded actions feature in Photoshop
' Attend team meetings and communicate the status of projects
' Collaborate with coworkers on Microsoft Teams and Outlook
' Managing your workload and deadlines using our task-management system (Basecamp)
Required Skills/Abilities
Must be very comfortable and knowledgeable in the following programs on Mac platform:
' Adobe InDesign CC (*especially interested if you have a strong grasp of formatting long, complex documents with threaded text and using paragraph/character styles, master pages, etc.)
' Adobe Photoshop CC
Other skills:
' Microsoft Word (*especially interested if you familiar with dynamic indexes and endnotes)
' Using font management software
' Basic understanding of prepress requirements: print resolution, proper color space and file formatting
' Social media savvy
' Experience using Dropbox
' Acute attention to detail
' Strong listening, communication, and organizational skills
' Strong command of the English language with a high radar for spotting errors; excellent verbal and written communications skills
' Work on a deadline
' Follow a work-flow protocol
' Work with a team or individually in a shared office setting
