This role is a network engineering role focused on designing, implementing, and troubleshooting complex network architectures utilizing Cisco's Segment Routing technology, primarily responsible for leveraging SR to optimize network traffic flow, simplify network management, and enable advanced features like traffic engineering across Service Provider and Enterprise Utility WAN networks, requiring deep expertise in Cisco routing protocols, MPLS, and segment routing configurations on Cisco devices.
Key responsibilities may include:
Network Design and Architecture:
- Designing segment routing-based network architectures to meet specific application requirements and traffic patterns.
- Selecting appropriate segment IDs and defining segment routing policies for efficient routing.
- Planning migration strategies from traditional MPLS networks to segment routing.
Implementation and Configuration:
- Configuring segment routing on Cisco routers and switches, including IGP-based SR, BGP-based SR, and SR-TE.
- Creating and managing SR policies to control traffic flow based on application needs.
- Troubleshooting network issues related to segment routing configuration and functionality.
Performance Optimization:
- Analyzing network traffic patterns to identify potential bottlenecks and optimize routing paths using SR.
- Implementing traffic engineering mechanisms like load balancing and path selection with segment routing.
Automation and Scripting:
- Developing automation scripts to streamline segment routing configuration and management tasks.
- Integrating network management tools with segment routing functionalities.
Required Skills and Knowledge:
- Deep understanding of Cisco routing protocols: OSPF, BGP, IS-IS
- MPLS expertise: MPLS concepts, LDP, Label distribution
- Segment Routing knowledge: SR concepts, SR policies, SR-TE
- Cisco IOS XR and IOS-XE configuration experience
- Network troubleshooting and analysis skills
- Scripting and automation proficiency (e.g., Python)
