The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is seeking a motivated and experienced candidate to fill a Security Team Specialist II position located at the Wrentham Developmental Center.

The Security Team Specialist II is a first-level supervisor in the Security team Department. Security Team Specialist II, in addition to routine patrols, guarding,
inspection, and surveillance, will work under the supervision of the Security Team Chief in supervising Security Team Specialist I’s.

Administrative duties, on-the-job training, and report submission are expected of the Security Team Specialist II.

The STSII will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all facility policies and procedures and assist in scheduling officers to meet minimum staffing levels during shifts for the Department.


Job Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities stated are a general summary and not all inclusive
  • Assisting in the planning, establishment, and monitoring of the appropriate security and emergency procedures for a
state facility to ensure compliance with standard policies, practices, laws, rules and regulations and to ensure the safety
and protection of institution residents, employees, visitors.
  • Supervises and coordinates the activities of Security Team Specialist I’s and other security personnel to ensure duties are
performed in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist in scheduling and maintaining STS I’s to ensure minimum staffing is met.
  • Patrol and monitor Facility grounds, conduct surveillance, screen visitors, and other reasonable measures to protect for
the health and wellbeing of the individuals on campus.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of campus security personnel through observation and conferences and by
reviewing reports and logs.
  • Assist in appropriate on-the-job training of subordinates and arranged for ongoing professional training and development
programs for security personnel.
  • Assist in the investigation of traffic accidents and subsequent report documentation.
  • Investigate complaints of suspicious activity, search for missing goods and persons, and mediate disputes.
  • Inspect buildings, grounds, fire lanes, and emergency exits for compliance with safety standards to ensure campus
security.
  • Assist local fire department, law enforcement, and emergency medical services responding to emergencies at the
facility.
  • Reinforce campus traffic, parking, and safety regulations, including assisting the Grounds Crew during snow storms.
  • Operate equipment such as radios, computers, telephonic switchboards, and fax machines.
  • Perform related duties as dictated by the Director of Operations and/or Facility Director at their sole discretion.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in the care and use of protective equipment and conflict de-escalation.
  • Knowledge of the terminology used in police work, criminal investigation, protective alarm systems and fingerprint
identification.
  • Knowledge on the transportation of injured individuals, foot and auto patrols, and surveillance work.
  • Knowledge of the methods and standards used for traffic, parking, and crowd management control.
  • Knowledge of life-saving techniques, including but not limited to CPR, soft-restraints and tourniquets, and other
techniques used in the field of first responders.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and their use.

Agency Requirements:
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must possess current and valid Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License.


Special Requirements:

  • Appointee must be eligible for appointment as a special police officer under Chapter 22C, Section 60 (DPH) and Section
    59 (DMH & DMR) of the Massachusetts General Laws.

Please Note:
  • This position is designated as an "EMERGENCY" position in the Department of Developmental Services Emergency
Plan. This means that whenever the Governor declares that the Commonwealth is in a state of emergency, selected
candidate be required to report to work.
  • This position is in a program that operates 24-hour/7 days a week. Candidates must be flexible in their work schedule.
The Department requires employees in this position to be able to perform Mandatory Overtime when circumstances
dictate the need.


Schedule Information:
Full-time – 40 hour weekly position
Schedule – 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Days off – Friday and Saturday
Flexibility with work schedule will be required for this position.

Qualifications

First

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in a governmental police force or in law enforcement work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. An Associate's degree with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*

II. A Bachelor's degree or higher, with a major in criminal justice, police science or law enforcement may be substituted for the required experience.*

  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
