General Definition of Work

STARTING WAGE OF $31.00 / HOUR

This position works all shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Performs intermediate technical work conducting activities that create and maintain a safe and secure environment for the residents of the County Jail, staff, and general public who enter the jail facility in accordance with County Jail policies and procedures and Minnesota statutes. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Corrections Sergeant.

Essential Functions

  • Performs booking, receiving, and processing of inmates.
  • Performs inmate release activities.
  • Supervises all inmate activities / movement while staying alert to any potential security risks, disruptions, security breaches, and unusual behavior; maintains order within the unit assigned, ensuring rules are followed and inmates are safe.
  • Ensures overall facility security by monitoring, conducting various checks, operating security control equipment, and responding appropriately.
  • Maintains electronic and paper records including daily logs of jail activities, medical services and fees, written reports, and bail bond records; enters information into appropriate databases and systems.
  • Responds to emergency situations within the jail such as fights, disturbances, medical situations, fire alarms, and other emergency calls and directs inmates, visitors, and other staff; provides backup to other correctional and patrol officers in critical incidents.
  • Administers jail visitor procedures; assists the public by providing information and answering questions; identifies, searches, and runs warrant checks on inmate visitors; accepts bail bonds and ensures that bondsmen are on the State approved list.
  • Assists in providing training to new Civilian Corrections Officers.
  • Performs other duties and activities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Associates / Technical degree or two years of full-time work experience in a related field, such as security, military service, Case Manager / supervisor in a social / community service setting, in-person customer service / direct sales, etc., or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must be able to pass medical evaluation, physical assessment screening, psychological evaluation, and background investigation.

Completion of the FTO Program is required (including First Aid / CPR) within six months of employment.

A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is also required upon hire.

Knowledge of the corrections field procedures and practices; knowledge of local, State, and Federal laws and regulations regulating and applicable to corrections; knowledge and understanding of Department policies, procedures, and regulations; knowledge, skills, and ability to maintain accurate and complete records, including electronic records; knowledge of first aid and emergency medical response; skill in the use of standard office equipment, including computer and software programs; verbal and written communication skills sufficient to effectively present information, respond to questions from a wide variety of audiences including individuals from diverse backgrounds, individuals not fluent in English, individuals with a wide variety of disorders, to testify in court; reading comprehension skills sufficient to read and interpret a wide variety of documents; interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and / or convey information, receive work direction, give direction and maintain effective working relationships; ability to learn applications / systems specific to the Department; ability to use equipment used in the jail such as digital fingerprint and photo equipment, Intoxilyzer, preliminary breath tester, video and audio equipment, medical equipment, etc.; ability to perform data entry into various databases; ability to sufficiently defend self and others in a physical encounter; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to work independently with minimal supervision; ability to remain calm and handle stressful situations; ability to effectively deal with inmates, identify problem areas with inmates, take charge and de-escalate dangerous behavior; ability to pay attention to detail and effectively organize time and anticipate, plan and successfully respond to changing circumstances; ability to perform all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices; ability to communicate courteously and professionally while maintaining positive working relationships with others when carrying out all job functions.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and / or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and / or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to outdoor weather conditions, working with explosives and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
