About the Role:
We’re seeking a motivated Drilling Assistant to join our team. As a vital member of our drill rig crew, you’ll work closely with a Crew Chief and gain hands-on experience using advanced drilling techniques, including mud rotary, solid stem, hollow stem, and diamond bit rock cores. This is an exciting opportunity to train as a driller while contributing to critical projects in the region.
In this role, you’ll assist with soil sampling, handling augers, maintaining field logs, and performing routine maintenance on drill rigs and related equipment. This is a physically demanding, fast-paced position, perfect for someone looking to build a career in a thriving engineering company. You’ll work mostly outdoors, travel to project sites, and enjoy the dynamic environment of fieldwork. Your role will be crucial in supporting a growing and highly skilled team.
Position Location:
This position will be based out of our Burnsville, Minnesota office, with most daily work occurring within Southeast Minnesota, the Twin Cities area, and surrounding regions including occasional out-of-state work. You’ll return to the office most nights to drop off samples and prepare for the next day’s activities. Occasional projects will take you to outstate Minnesota or the surrounding states, with overnight stays required for some of these projects.
What You’ll Do:
- Prepare & Mobilize Equipment: Ensure all necessary equipment is ready for each day’s project.
- Operate a Vehicle: Drive a Class D vehicle (Minnesota Driver’s License and Health Card required).
- Assist on the Drill Rig: Help with soil sampling, handling augers, and maintaining field logs for soil classifications and profiles.
- Maintenance & Cleaning: Perform standard maintenance on the drill rig, support vehicles, and other equipment.
- Soil Sample Collection: Prepare jars and collect soil samples with care.
- Borehole Backfilling & Sealing: Follow Minnesota Department of Health sealing procedures.
- Complete Documentation: Accurately log field data and maintain neat and organized records.
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere to National Drilling Association safety guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
What You’ll Bring:
- Limited Drilling Experience?: No problem! WSB is eager to teach you the ropes and support your learning.
- Health Card: Must obtain a Medical/Health Card within 30 days of employment.
- Valid Minnesota Class D Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
- Physical Endurance: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally.
- Outdoor Work: Comfortable working in various weather and site conditions, including extended hours.
- Travel Flexibility: Willing to travel to out-of-town sites and stay overnight on occasion.
- Mechanical Aptitude: A plus, but not required—this role is a great opportunity to learn!
- Safety-Conscious: A strong commitment to adhering to safety protocols and guidelines.
- Dependable & Trustworthy: A solid work ethic and reliability are key.
- Team Player: Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Bonus Qualifications:
- CDL Class A or B: A big plus if you have it.
- 40-hour Hazmat training.
- CPR or First Aid certification.
