This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Early Career Environmental Scientist for our Minneapolis, Minnesota or Duluth, Minnesota office. Be involved in a wide variety of projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the collection, identification, and compiling of observational and spatial data concerning a variety of biological, physical, and earth sciences. Provides local assistance for the development of processes and infrastructure relating to water supply, air emission, pollution control, cultural impact, and preserving the quality of the environment by identifying, controlling, and preventing disruption to environmental systems and species caused by human activity. Generates accurate and concise documentation, ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

Your Impact

  • Under general supervision, conduct natural resource field surveys collecting observational, spatial, and environmental data.
  • Oversee soil borings and groundwater monitoring well installations, collect soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, air, and soil gas samples, collect data in complex field situations with supervision, and document field activities.
  • Assist with performing basic professional environmental science work relating to ecological systems, air, and water resources, assisting with verifying the characteristics of a site and providing entry-level technical assistance on various environmental issues.
  • Perform other field exploration, inspection, testing, and analyses using equipment and instrumentation.
  • Conduct wildlife, biota surveys
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, the maintenance of sample collection, location data, laboratory or statistical documentation, and logbooks.
  • Prepare components of site investigation reports including work plans, data summaries, calculations, tables, figures, charts, drawings and report text.
  • Assist Project Managers and project teams, ensuring effective client communication and relations.
  • Organize field work, assign tasks, and work with other staff specialists and technicians to complete assignments.
  • Follow company safety policies and procedures, site safety standards, and permit requirements.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science or related field.
  • Analytical skills, and familiarity with research techniques, environmental regulations, and investigations.
  • Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, and technology.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
  • The ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team.
  • Physical Demands: The ability to lift 50 pounds, and to remain on feet for extended periods of time either stationary or walking through all types of terrain.
  • Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions, including heat and cold.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, the maintenance of sample collection, location data, laboratory or statistical documentation, and logbooks.
  • The ability to uphold workplace safety practices and abide by WSP’s health and safety policies.
  • This role is subject to client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policies. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.
  • Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a tight-fitting respirator / Fit for Duty Exam / Medical Exam.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.
  • Travel will be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study.

Compensation:

Expected Salary (all locations): $49,400 - $74,100

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
