JOB TITLE: Post-Secondary Success Counselor

 

REPORTS TO: Post-Secondary Success Coordinator

 

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Non-Exempt

 

PAY GRADE: AI 2

PRIMARY PURPOSE:


The Post-Secondary Success Counselor will coordinate and facilitate a successful college and
career readiness program; support students through all phases of the high school to
post-secondary transition; and collaborate and provide support to CTE and other departments.

 

The Post-Secondary Success Counselor must act with integrity, support organizational goals,
demonstrate the ability to inspire, grow and motivate others, utilize feedback, drive for results
and commit to championing the needs of the students, employees and overall District.

Qualifications:


Required:


EDUCATION


• Master's degree in counseling from an accredited college or university

 

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE

 

• Valid Texas School Counselor certificate as required by the State Board of Education
Certification


WORK EXPERIENCE
• Three years of high school counseling experience

 

Preferred:

  • Strong knowledge of CCMR
  • Strong knowledge of college entrance requirements

MAJOR REPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:


GUIDANCE:


• Consult with parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, and other relevant
individuals to enhance the work of building a college and career bound culture within
the feeder pattern.
• Plan and lead presentations to all stakeholders regarding key topics: college,
scholarship and financial aid applications, assessments, timelines, dual credit, and
military awareness.
• Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, and other relevant individuals
to conduct classroom presentations.
• Assist students and parents in the completion of FAFSA/TASFA applications in order
to meet graduation requirements.
• Coordinate student volunteer opportunities and maintain a log of student volunteer
hours for DSG graduates.
• Conduct individual junior and senior conferences at least once during the school year.
Complete a written post-high school plan with each student during the conference.
• Provide specific information to students, teachers, parents and counselors regarding
college entrance requirements, applications, scholarships, costs, deadlines, testing,
and military options.
• Provide guidance for CCMR at the feeder middle schools and 9 th grade campuses.

 

COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS:


• Collaborate with Lone Star College to implement a comprehensive Dual Credit
Program.
• Implement a comprehensive and equitable college and career readiness program for
your campus.
• Compile and maintain a comprehensive scholarship tracking system.
• Report and maintain a comprehensive FAFSA/TASFA tracking system.

• Plan and coordinate college fairs, military services, and guest speakers for post-
secondary options (campus level).
• Monitor and track CCMR data for state accountability.
• Collaborate with campus and district in the implementation of meeting CCMR goals.
• Assist students with the completion and submission of college applications on all
platforms.
• Assist students in the collection of recommendations letters from teachers,
counselors, and administrators.
• Distribute fee waivers to students participating in the free and reduced lunch program.
• Coordinate and plan Career Day.
• Service and support middle schools with various leadership platforms (i.e., JA,
ExxonMobil, Career Destination).
• Coordinate and plan Career Connections Job Fair for seniors only.
• Collaborate with the non-tradition high school campuses to provide college and
career readiness support.
• Work with the professional school counselor in identifying and recruiting students for
the Associate degree.
• Process the student’s NCAA or NAIA wavier.

 

ASSESSMENTS:


• Plan, coordinate, and facilitate college, career and military readiness assessments
such as the Texas Success Initiative 2 (TSIA2), PSAT, SAT, ACT, and ASVAB.
• Provide information and materials to students taking PSAT, SAT, ACT, TSIA2, and
ASVAB.

 

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT:


• Maintain scholarship lists and other financial aid awards.
• Maintain a current inventory of College and Career Center equipment and materials;
assist in determining purchase priorities.
• Create and maintain the campus college and career readiness website.
• Facilitate and plan family workshops related to post-secondary planning
• Support and administer the district’s chosen college and career pathway platform.
• Utilize the Naviance system to distribute transcripts to colleges and universities when
requested by students.
• Create and maintain a calendar of events for postsecondary activities for your
campus.
• Collaborate with administrations and the lead counselor to implement a successful
awards ceremony.


ADMINISTRATION:


• Collaborates with the Post-Secondary Success Coordinator and other Postsecondary
Success Counselors to ensure standardized practices throughout the district.
• Collaborate with campus and the Post-Secondary Success Coordinator in the
accomplishment of CCMR Goals.

• Adhere to ethical and legal standards and model behavior that is professional and
responsible.

 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:


• Participate in professional development opportunities to include: conferences and
seminars about college entrance; financial aid; career opportunities; and military
enlistment to improve skills related to the job assignment.
• Remain current on all college and career admission trends including merit and need-
based aid, and standardized testing, by attending college and career updates meetings.

 

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED:

  • Oversee campus data collection for annual reports and program evaluations.
  • Direct handling of any and all situations that arise in the college counseling process.
  • Other duties as assigned by campus administrators and district officials.

WORKING CONDITIONS:


The usual and customary methods of performing the job & functions require the following
physical demands:

  • Physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or
  • pulling.
  • This position will also require nights, weekends, and both traveling within the district and
  • state wide.
  • Mental demands: ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to
  • interpret a variety of data; ability to interpret TEC and policy; ability to apply knowledge
  • of current research and theory, ability to be effective in both oral and written
  • communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
  • At times long hours maybe required.
