Job Title : Regulatory Officer I - Food Material

Nature of Work :
An employee in this full-time position inspects retail, distribution and manufacturing facilities which handle products that are monitored as stipulated in the laws and regulations of the State and by the policies of the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA). These products may include but are not limited to : frozen desserts, dairy products, shell eggs, retail meats, and produce. Inspections of other commodities may be required on occasion and may be directed at the discretion of division administrators. Employee may also conduct contract work for the FDA, USDA, and the WVDHHR / BPH.
Examples of Work :
- Inspect soft serve freezer operations and sample frozen dessert products for bacterial analyses and enter all data in the WVDA computer system.
- Inspect retail meat operations and sample retail meat products for bacterial and composition analyses and enter all data in the WVDA computer system.
- Inspect and sample frozen and fresh dairy products at retail outlets and distributors and enter all data in the WVDA computer system.
- Select and grade shell eggs in grocery stores, restaurants, retail outlets and distributors, and enter all data into the WVDA computer system.
- Conduct USDA Shell Egg Inspections with the ability to fill out complex USDA forms and paperwork.
- Conduct USDA Poultry Inspections with the ability to fill out complex USDA forms and paperwork.
- Conduct Preparation and Satellite Site Inspections and collect samples for the WVDHHR Summer Food Program and enter all information in the WVDA computer system.
- Conduct Farmers Market and Farmers Market Vendor inspections, with the ability to educate and convey complex issues; fill out complex forms and enter into a computer system.
- Responds to consumer complaints regarding products regulated by WVDA.
- Compiles necessary reports and documents to be completed after inspections and sampling.
- Conduct recalls for the WVDA or to assist the FDA, USDA, or WVDHHR / BPH when necessary.
- Complete numerous trainings online and in classroom settings to comply with the Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Standards.
- Be proficient in numerous computer programs to complete all inspections and enter data for samples and inspection at all firms.
- Submit applicable inspection reports to supervisor for review weekly.
- Complete weekly time and leave sheets.
- Complete Daily Activity Reports to be sent to supervisor weekly.
- Complete monthly transportation log, thermometer calibration log cash advance forms, and send them to supervisor as applicable.
- Complete travel expense settlement form as applicable.
- Assist in the Training of Regulatory Officers I regarding the proper Inspection and Sampling procedures for the Agricultural Materials.
- Provides technical assistance to retailers, producers and distributors.
- Attends state and national meetings and training seminars.
- Performs related and other duties as required by the division administrators.
- Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions :
Frequently : Bend, squat, stand, sit, climb, kneel, reach above shoulder level, push / pull and / or walk for extended periods of time, drive motorized equipment, outside work and ability to lift / carry 50 pounds. Work in disaster areas, such as floods and fires. Possible work in extreme weather including heat, cold, rain, and snow in warehouses, egg facilities, dairy plants, counter freezer firms, and any other numerous regulated product facilities regulated by the WVDA READ.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Qualifications :
Education : Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university with a degree in food science, agriculture, agri-business, criminal justice or related field.
