Nature of Work

Under general supervision, the Disease Intervention Specialist 1 provides comprehensive disease intervention services across various settings throughout the state of West Virginia. This role supports the prevention, identification, and management of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) by engaging in both public health outreach and clinical support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver healthcare-related services, including:
  • Locating and counseling individuals with new or existing STD diagnoses
  • Providing STD education and prevention resources
  • Coordinating testing and treatment efforts statewide
  • Adapt intervention strategies to address varying and sometimes unpredictable situations, requiring frequent reassessment and additional training as needed.
  • Participate in surveillance and data-sharing activities; work is reviewed through reports, shared case information, and regular supervisory conferences.
  • Serve as an STD subject matter expert, offering consultation and education during conferences, trainings, and in response to public or provider inquiries.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

Substitution: Experience as described below may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required training.

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience in STD/HIV control, nursing, or social services and/or public health case management and case investigation.

Special Requirement: A valid driver's license and the availability of an automobile is required. A Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certificate for laboratory testing may be required.
