Under general supervision of the Pathologist or Pathology Assistant, assists pathology in the receipt, processing and organization of surgical tissue specimens in the Gross Room in support of the hospital's mission and goals.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

1. Assists in the surgical pathology Gross Room procedures; accessioning of specimens, preparation and fixation of specimens, and preparation of intra-operative frozen sections.
2. Assists in pick-up of specimens from various hospital locations, verifying specimen identification and resolving discrepancies. Also assists in delivery of specimens from the gross room to morgue, histology, storage, or other areas as needed.
3. Receives, identifies, processes, accessions, specimens from outside laboratories according to regulations. Also processes, prepares, and sends specimens to outside laboratories or department if necessary, accurately completing all associated paperwork.
4. Assists in maintaining general working status of gross room, including stocking workstations, completion of logs, notification of appropriate personnel of needed supplies, and general lab and equipment maintenance and cleanup.
5. Maintains chain-of-custody in medico-legal cases, according to SOP.
6. Assures all necessary equipment is functioning according to specs and provides appropriate documentation. Immediately reports anything that is unacceptable to the area coordinator and/or supervisor.
7. Completes all quality assurance logs and immediately reports anything that is unacceptable to the area coordinator and/or supervisor. Documents all QA work and resolutions.
8. Reports medical and operational problems.to the Pathologists, Pathology Assistants, Manager and/or Coordinator, as required.
9. May be assigned to train staff in all non-grossing duties.
10. Preserves specimens for conferences, teaching or research (i.e., organs, sections of organs), according to SOP.
11. Participates in the educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future needs in support of the department's, hospital's and the university's goals and mission of teaching and research. Participates as required, in the education of medical students, residents histology and Pathology Assistant students, as established by SOP.

Additional Job Description:
The successful candidate will function in a dual role capacity by providing extra support as a Morgue Technician and an Anatomic Pathology Technician. As a Morgue Technician, the successful candidate will be participating in the daily operations of the Morgue with autopsy examinations under the supervision of the Pathologist(s), Pathology Assistant(s) and Resident(s) while working in conjunction with other Morgue Technician(s). The successful candidate will assist by the accessioning of autopsies, body preparation, evisceration, and tissue acquisition for histology review. In addition, the successful candidate will interact with Hospital personnel, Pathology and Histology staff, Funeral Homes, County and State Medical Examiners, body transport services, Human Gift Registry, and CORE to properly direct the proper movement and disposition of the deceased, their personal belongings, and legal needs.
As an Anatomic Pathology Technician, the successful applicant will be primarily working in a laboratory setting under the supervision of the Pathologist Assistant(s) and in coordination with other Anatomic Pathology Technicians. They will be required to assist the staff in accessioning laboratory specimens and retrieve collected specimens from different locations within the hospital and attached buildings. In addition, the laboratory technician will be expected to assist with the preparation of frozen section slides and other needs of the Pathologist Assistant(s) as they arise throughout their shift. They will be required to perform afternoon duties such as transporting grossed cassettes to Histology and loading the tissue processors, preparing fresh H&E stain solutions, re-stocking supplies, cleaning workstations, and other duties as assigned. The successful candidate must follow and adhere to standard operating procedures and policies within the department. The laboratory technician must have a general knowledge of medical terminology and a background or familiarity with forensic science, biology, and/or chemistry is preferred. In addition, the successful application would be responsible with retrieving the batch (cassettes) from the “Gross Room” which is located right outside the OR’s in the main hospital. They must follow and adhere to standard operating procedures and policies within the department.
