- Trains and carries out an on-the-bench training program for the new technologist and students.
- Participates in external Proficiency Testing and maintains established levels of Continuing Education required for licensure and remain updated on changes/progress in the Medical Technology field.
- Must follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Must be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affects test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the Supervisor or director.
- Follows the Hospital and Laboratory policies for Safety which includes proper use of Personal.
- Protective Equipment and Chemicals.
- Utilizes supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
- Maintains a neat, clean and efficient work area.
- Exercises all duties consistent with the needs of all patients regardless of age.
- Understands, follows and implements the Hospital's policies for confidentiality of patient and employee records.
- Exhibits good customer relation skills.
- Uses all the equipment available. Applies QC criteria, calibrates and maintains instruments as per Departmental SOP.
- Practices clinical science in the specialty of hematology, hemostasis, urine and body fluids analysis. The technologist is responsible for a wide range of laboratory assays intended for the examination of these various biological specimens.
- Must be able to operate and maintain automated laboratory analyzers and other laboratory equipment based on departmental standard of operation.
- Must possess sufficient academic, technical and clinical skills and knowledge to evaluate, troubleshoot, research and resolve day-to-day problems that arise or special projects as assigned by the supervisor.
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments. Keeps adequate records. Informs supervisor of equipment or product failure, and problems requiring special attention.
- Performs and document daily quality control measurements. Recognizes and solves quality control problems. Documents corrective actions when QC results exceed tolerance limits.
- Initiates QC practices on new parameters and evaluates old ones, by establishing limits other than those provided by manufactures.
- Must be able to perform or willing to learn laboratory computer operations, such as: log-in test requests, print daily logs, enter manual results, edit and post patient results, print reports, retrieve reports and other computer functions.
- Follows procedures for processing specimens for analysis. Evaluates and solves specimen problems and implements established steps for specimen rejection, notification of rejection and documentation of such events.
- Performs all other duties as required.
Position Requirements
- This position requires a minimum formal education of Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 1 year job-related experience.
- Desired (not required) criteria include: 4-year college degree (Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology) from accredited institution. 2 years experience in Laboratory field.
- NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License.
