Responsible for performing and assessing highly technical and complex clinical laboratory tests on specimens for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in a timely fashion. Assist with Supervisory duties on the Day, Evening/Night shifts and perform a wide variety of complex testing in Blood bank. Organizes patient transfusion, test results, and inventories of blood products and laboratory supplies to provide optimum service according to Blood bank management policies and protocols. Works independently under general direction to address laboratory needs as the occasion arises. Monitor workload, workflow, TAT and technical staff performance. Responsible for complying with Wyckoff Mission Statement and for the provision of safe and timely transfusion services for all Wyckoff patients by carrying out blood banking and transfusion processes according to rules and guidelines established by AABB, CAP NYS Department of Health, FDA, CLIA, Joint Commission, EPA, OSHA and the standards contained in the Blood Bank Quality Assurance plan and self-assessment program. Budget control and Ordering of Reagents and Supplies for the Blood Bank Laboratory. Work under the general direction of the Blood Bank Manager and Blood Bank Director.
- Assists Blood Bank Supervisor in monitoring and compliance of organization's Service Standards by laboratory employees.
- Serves as back-up Supervisor for the Blood Bank lab in the absence of the Supervisor.
- Ensures that leadership is kept aware of work situations and the performance of each employee on an on going basis.
- Performs scheduling and workflow changes as necessary.
- Trains new and current employees; oversee the technical performance for the new employees during the orientation and less qualified personnel assigned to the same area.
- Offers continuing guidance and technical assistance to employees on work activities and procedure.
- Communicates lab section problems with equipment, reagent, media, etc to the Supervisor, Director and Administration.
- Assists with troubleshooting technical problems by utilizing expertise in the field.
- Monitors the work of staff to provide clear and accurate feedback to supervisor regarding their performance.
- Remind and document employees who are not complying with set standards.
- Aid lab section director in drafting and implementing operational standards related to technical aspects of the laboratory.
- Monitors laboratory productivity; including supervisory review of abnormal and critical results, following up on incompletes, and monitoring turn-around-time.
- Provide mentoring and guidance to employees in the absence of a lab Section supervisor, Director.
- Is knowledgeable about patient confidentiality information.
- Assists in supervising all shifts technical staff and provides support to the Supervisor, Administrator, and lab section COQ holder.
- Arranges priorities, especially for requests that must have very short TAT.
- Follows the Hospital and Laboratory policies for Safety which includes proper use of Personal.
- Protective Equipment and Chemicals.
- Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
- Must document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Must be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must contract the problems or immediately notify the supervisor or director.
- Must follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory, established acceptable levels of performance.
- Practices clinical science in the specialty of immunohematology, which means is responsible for the examination of specimens taken from the human body to provide information or products for use in the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of a disease.
- Follows procedures for processing biological specimen for analysis. Evaluates and solves specimen problems and follows procedures for specimen rejection.
- Performs immunopharmacological clinical laboratory examination including compatibility testing, unexpected transfusion outcome investigation, antibody identification and related immunopharmacological procedures, including proficiency testing and quality control.
- Detects discrepancies in results and institutes correct follow-up procedures, develops solutions to problems concerning the generation of laboratory data.
- Follows procedures for issuing blood/blood components, laboratory test results and reports critical results according to section policy.
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments. Keeps adequate records. Informs supervisor of equipment on product failure, and problems requiring special attention.
- Performs and document daily quality control measures. Recognizes and solves quality control problems. Documents corrective actions when quality control results exceed tolerance limits.
- Evaluates new techniques, instruments and procedures as required.
- Utilizes supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
- Performs clinical laboratory examinations as well as clerical duties as needed.
- Maintains a neat, clean and efficient work area.
- Exercises all duties consistent with the needs of all patients regardless of age.
- Understands, follows and implements the Hospital's policies for confidentiality of patient and employee records.
- Exhibits good customer relations skills.
- Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as Patient specimens.
Position Requirements
- This position requires a minimum formal education of Bachelor Degree or certification equivalent and a minimum of 1 year job-related experience.
- Desired (not required) criteria include: Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or a related field plus, 1 year training (6 months in Blood Bank) and 1-2 years experience or hold applicable NYC CQ as of 6/30/94 and has worked as a medical technologist at least 3 years since 1989.
- New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
- Board-registered with one of national registries associated with laboratory practice (NCA, ASCP, etc.) preferred.
