TITLE: Underwriter
DEPARTMENT: Lending Operations
REPORTS TO: Lending Operations Manager
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
POSITION TYPE: Full-time

Position Summary
Responsible for reviewing, analyzing, approving, and underwriting member loans within WyHy and industry guidelines. The Underwriter prioritizes loans to various deadlines and uses their knowledge to make approval decisions based on creditworthiness and risk. The Underwriter also suggests alternative loan options or steps that can be used for future approval to individuals whose loan requests were denied.

Essential Functions
  • Calculate, analyze, evaluate, and make independent decisions on credit, income, assets, and risk to determine the income or probability of repayment for loan requests;
  • Communicate decisions (approvals/denials) of all credit applications to their appropriate parties (member, Member Service Advisor, Loan Operations Manager and/or Chief Lending Officer)
  • Provide loan support to all retail staff and indirect dealerships;
  • Achieve decisioning-time targets;
  • Select stipulation requirements on any approved applications that meet standards set by internal/external guidelines;
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of all Credit Union lending policies and procedures;
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of all State and Federal lending laws, rules, and regulations;
  • Perform other duties as directed by leadership;
  • Ensure collateralization and collectability of loan assets.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED with two years’ experience in banking/finance.
  • Experience in consumer loan origination.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Five years of experience in loan underwriting in a credit union or financial institution, or the equivalent combination of schooling and related experience.
  • MeridianLink Consumer; Loans PQ/Opening Act experience.
  • Symitar/Episys experience.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • This position requires a perceptive person capable of relating to individuals at all levels. As unique situations present themselves, the individual must be sensitive to Credit Union needs and member and employee goodwill.
  • Professional, well-developed interpersonal skills, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent member service skills, attentiveness, information retention, tact and diplomacy in dealing with both members and employees; ability to be polite and compassionate without lacking confidence.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with personal private information.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, with an ability to multi-task.
  • Strong computer and Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook skills.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Knowledge of CU collection policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
  • Ability to be thorough and set priorities in alignment with departmental goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of NCUA Regulations concerning lending regulations.
  • Knowledge of credit union’s lending policies and procedures, mortgage loan policy, credit criteria.
  • Knowledge of interest rates and how they are computed.
  • Knowledge of credit union and competitor's pricing, products, delivery channels.
Physical Requirements
  • While this position is primarily sedentary, while performing the essential duties of the position the employee may be required to stand, sit, walk, stoop, kneel, talk, see and hear. The nature of this position requires physical mobility and the ability to occasionally lift and/or move a maximum of 50 pounds with assistance. This position may include prolonged periods of time working on a computer and looking at a monitor screen.
Position Requirements
  • Core business operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM; evenings and/or weekends may be required. Travel and time spent outside the office may be required.
  • Requirement to be bonded. Successful background check including personal credit report and criminal record.
