POSITION TITLE: Group Leader
REPORTS TO: Leadership Class 1 and 2 Summer Coordinator
FLSA STATUS: Exempt/Daily Rate
POSITION SUMMARY: Group Leaders are seasonal members of the Wyman Leaders Program team. They live in cabins with 6-10 teens and are responsible for the daily supervision and support of teens. Group Leaders are responsible for the creation and facilitation of programs and activities throughout the summer. This is a residential position, requiring full-time residence at Wyman’s 85 acre campus in Eureka, MO from late May to late July. Free room and board are provided.
FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Essential Functions
- Supervise, mentor, and reside with a cabin of 6-10 teens.
- Create and facilitate daily programs and activities that achieve Wyman Leaders outcomes; complete all other duties as assigned.
- Establish and maintain healthy and appropriate relationships with teens, focusing on safety, support, interaction, and engagement.
- Create a sense of camaraderie and positive community for teens.
- Provide leadership, support, and supervision when accompanying teens on 4-9 day camping trip (“trek”); assist trek staff as needed.
- Anticipate and mitigate situations of challenging teen behavior.
- Consult and collaborate with supervisory staff to ensure teens’ needs are met.
- Actively participate in daily team meetings.
- Consult with supervisory staff regarding teen issues and/or disclosures; complete necessary documentation related to teen issues and/or disclosures.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to establish and sustain positive rapport with youth of all ages and diverse backgrounds; proven success in youth and family interactions and a strong ability to create and sustain mentoring relationships with youth.
- Comfortable with facilitating programs related to camp; engaging and positive in delivery of programs.
- Performs skills in a safe manner and recognizes the importance of putting teen wellbeing first; where necessary can teach and demonstrate skills.
- Consistently models for staff and teens appropriate and positive interactions. Models healthy lifestyle, pace, and care of self within camp.
- Demonstrates the behavior outcomes sought within programs.
- Able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
- Ability to make sound decisions in a timely manner based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment.
- Able to anticipate, identify, and resolve problems in a timely manner, gathers information skillfully, and works well with others to solve problems.
- Uses resources effectively and efficiently.
- Open to personal growth and ability to respond to constructive feedback

Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions: Work within a summer camp environment, wilderness, and normal office conditions. Sleep in a tent while camping on trek.
