Summary of Responsibilities
Library Assistant responsibilities include providing circulation services to library patrons.
Circulation services include but are not limited to reference services, readers’ advisory,
organizing collection, creating displays, computer skills instruction and assistance,
interaction with the public daily.
Key Duties
- Handles basic circulation duties.
- Answer phones and answer questions appropriately (Information, Reference, and Directional Questions)
- Answer basic reference questions or refer library users to the appropriate staff person.
- Readers’ Advisory, helping patrons find additional materials.
- Use library computerized circulation system.
- Assist with library programs.
- Create displays.
- Promote library services and programs to the public.
- Assist library users with finding library materials.
- Present a friendly demeanor to the public.
- Operate specific equipment (Computer, Tablets, Copiers/ Printers, cash register, and credit card device.)
- Shelve materials and read shelves to maintain an orderly collection.
- Open/close library with other staff.
- Politely and equitably enforce library policies.
- Provide computer assistance to library users.
- Take initiative to identify and suggest ways to improve the patrons’ experience.
- Participates in relevant training workshops.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Detailed Description
Work is performed primarily in a library environment. Working with the public daily. Position requires excellent customer service, oral and written skills.
This position requires strong computer skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The person in this position will often need to provide computer support for library users, including Windows, MAC, iOS, and Android devices.
Consistent, personalized customer service that follows library policy is a priority. The library assistant must be able to maintain a calm, professional demeanor when dealing with stressful situations.
Manual dexterity and physical ability to reach and shelve library materials, sort books, use software and a variety of media formats at a variety of heights is required. Sufficient vision, hearing and speech are essential to communicate with patrons and to assist them in locating materials, using computers or other office equipment. Must have sufficient hand eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and keyboard, telephone, and other office equipment.
Physical exertion will be required to lift library materials and other supplies from overhead and from the floor. Must have the ability to move around the library. This position may require movement, standing or sitting for long periods of time.
Modern libraries function as a community center; where patrons gather to socialize, and staff will be enthusiastic about supporting that function.

Minimum Qualifications
- At least 18 years old.
- 2 years of education beyond High School or equivalent work experience
- A reliable means of transportation is required.
- Demonstrated customer service skills.
- Strong computer skills
- Experience with Office 365 and MS Office products.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience
- Customer service work experience
- Work related experience with a variety of technical equipment.
- Experience in a library setting.
- Experience in instruction to a wide range of age groups and abilities
- Demonstrated experience in working productively, individually, and as a member of a team.
