Wytheville Community College is seeking an Advising Coordinator to serve as a key liaison between Student Services advisors, academic divisions, and faculty. In this role, the coordinator will oversee the advising process, attend division and curriculum meetings, update policies and technology and actively engage with the QEP leadership team to address advising-related issues. The Advising Coordinator will also supervise full-time advisors and coaches, while working to resolve complex academic issues related to curriculum, prerequisites, and eligibility, using the college catalog and other relevant resources.
Beginning in Fall 2025, the Advising Coordinator will lead the advising component of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), collaborating with Academic Divisions, Admissions, QEP Leadership Team, and the Dean of Academic Development and Student Success to ensure that objectives are met throughout the 2025-2030 period. The coordinator will also maintain the advising handbook and WCC Cares Canvas page and onboard new advisors to the college. The coordinator will verify the accuracy of program information and support the collection and analysis of data related to student enrollment, persistence, and progression. Additionally, this position will facilitate professional development opportunities for the campus community focused on advising best practices.
In addition to these administrative responsibilities, the Advising Coordinator will provide academic advising to prospective, current, and former students within the Student Services 1Stop. This will include assessing academic abilities, developing academic plans, assisting with career exploration, and presenting at new student orientations. The coordinator will also document student interactions, manage confidential records, be familiar with transfer processes and maintain communication with faculty advisors. By fostering academic excellence and supporting student success, this role plays a critical part in academic coaching, course scheduling, and engaging with students, faculty, and staff to create a supportive and successful academic environment.
This position will report directly to the Dean of Student Success and Academic Development.
- Master’s degree and extensive experience in education, counseling, or advising or equivalent training, education, or experience.
- Experience successfully supervising full time-staff.
- Experience in planning and implementing programming for new students, student, and faculty engagement and persistence activities, and professional development.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, customer service, and time management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to make independent judgments, analyze and solve problems, manage multiple tasks, and work independently as a self-starter.
- Experience using current office software such as Microsoft Office.
- Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
- Demonstrated ability to work empathetically with people from diverse backgrounds on an inter-professional team.
- Experience in the delivery of in-service training to practitioners on academic advising and information procedures.
- Master’s in counseling preferred.
- Experience interpreting, and applying college/university, state, and federal policies/procedures.
- Experience in advising in a higher education academic setting.
- Previous experience/knowledge working with PeopleSoft, Navigate, Canvas and other educational technologies or student records software system.
- Knowledge of new students, student advocacy, and student persistence and retention issues and strategies.
· Community College experience preferred.
