Dean of Students
The Dean of Students’ primary responsibility is the formation of young men of conscience, competence, and compassion. The Dean of Students must create an atmosphere conducive to instructional effectiveness, including safety and good order, and clearly articulate and enforce the integrity, respectability, and conduct expected of a Xavier student.
The Dean of Students reports directly to the Headmaster and is a member of the administrative leadership team. The Dean of Students has direct oversight of his team, the nurse, and security. The Dean of Students should be someone who holds firm and fair parameters for students in formation; communicates well with adolescents and adults; practices firm patience when facing adolescent behavioral mistakes; and understands the vital role that our Jesuit, Catholic charism has in the formation of the young men of Xavier.
Ideal candidates will have significant experience working with adolescents in a school environment; an advanced degree (with a preference for educational leadership and/or administration); experience that demonstrates a clear capacity to lead initiatives; fluency in social media as it pertains to student use; enthusiasm for working with students towards excellence; a commitment to the school mission; and a strong faith life.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Student Behavior and School Discipline: Encourages a positive climate of conscientious order that promotes personal growth and learning; manages and enforces school behavioral expectations; confers with students, parents and guardians, school counselors, school psychologists, and teachers regarding student-related policies and administers appropriate student consequences; consults with and makes recommendations to the Headmaster on accountability boards; regularly reviews and updates the Student Handbook on matters pertaining to school policies and student behavior; supervises, enacts, and reinforces school discipline policies and procedures as outlined in the Student Handbook; manages JUG by overseeing and monitoring patterns and practice; maintains records of discipline-related incidents and communicates with students, parents, Headmaster, counselors, and appropriate faculty/staff about student behavior and other concerns.
- Student Attendance, Supervision, and Transportation: Oversees verification, documentation, and communication of daily student attendance; holds conferences with parents and guardians when a student exhibits concerning attendance patterns; supervises students, as well as manages and supports faculty supervision of student common spaces before, during, and after the school day, including on-campus and off-site student events; advises faculty of special situations regarding health, attendance, and discipline including, but not limited to, reasons for extended absence, suspension, and expulsion; with the Director of Facilities, oversees, manages, and maintains student spaces and lockers; communicates with the city and state regarding student behavior on public transit (New York City MTA, Metro-North, and Long Island Railroad).
- Student Health and School Safety: Oversees the nurse in management of the immediate care of sick or injured students and related communication to parents and guardians; oversees the collection and management of student medical records, information, and spare rescue medication, as per state and city mandates; oversees communication as needed to faculty, coaches, and moderators about student health issues; oversees the school’s liaison with the New York Department of Health for mandated communication and documentation and Magnus; maintains school First Aid supplies; collaborates with the Director of Facilities and the security team on matters of school safety including, but not limited to, state-mandated training and drills; regularly reviews and updates the school Crisis Management Plan and oversees Ruvna use; leads campus safety and security efforts, including policy, training, implementation, record-keeping, and response.
- Member of the Administrative Team: Collaborates with Dean of Educational Systems and Dean of Faculty to ensure that classes and common areas are appropriately proctored during the school day; assists the DoES with attendance during AP exams; oversees the posting of semester room schedules as provided by the DoES; ensures appropriate desk count in classrooms according the information provided by the DoES; collaborates with the Dean of Academics on faculty reports of incidents related to academic integrity, including suspected inappropriate use of artificial intelligence; communicates with the DoA about extended and/or unexcused absence to ensure appropriate student accountability and student attendance.
- Other Tasks and Duties:
- Maintains a highly visible presence throughout the school and at school-sponsored activities/events, including overseeing supervision of dances and some sporting and extra-curricular events; oversees budget and policy and evaluates programs related to student health and security; develops, in conjunction with students, faculty, and administration, such guidelines, regulations, and programs as are useful to facilitate self-growth and responsibility; maintains communication with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators in matters pertaining to student non-academic difficulties;
- Serves as a member of the administration in weekly and policy meetings;
- Serves at the weekly at-risk meetings with counseling, psychologists, and DoA;
- Coordinates and collaborates with student mental health team;
- Serves on the following committees: administrative team, facilities committee, admissions reading committee, and others as assigned;
- Supervises Community Council and accountability boards;
- Supervises on-campus parking and neighborhood precinct relations and coordinates related communication with parents, faculty/staff, and students;
- At times the position may include involvement in teaching, coaching, and/or moderating a club;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
