Job Summary
The Department of Sociology at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applicants for a full-time lecturer position in Sociology beginning Fall 2025. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Sociology, expertise in criminology or deviance focused on social inequalities, and a secondary specialization in race and ethnicity, urban and community sociology, gender, or family. Additionally, the ideal candidate will demonstrate eagerness and readiness to offer support and guidance for the “Crime and Social Justice” major concentration.
Candidates should be committed to excellence and continual growth in teaching, to maintaining an active research program that involves undergraduates, and to offering support or leadership in service to the department, community, college, and university. Interested candidates should demonstrate a capacity and willingness to effectively manage a 4-4 teaching load, encompassing a variety of courses across all levels. In addition to the introductory course and courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, a successful candidate should be prepared to teach courses required for sociology majors such as theory. The ideal candidate will contribute to the university’s mission to advance social justice through preparing students for leadership and service by establishing opportunities for undergraduate research, fostering community partnerships aligned with the mission and the curriculum, or offering leadership for engaging students in policy arenas adjacent to the “Crime and Social Justice” curriculum. Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Sociology
- Strong commitment to teaching a full load of 24 credit hours per academic year;
- Demonstrate a strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse undergraduate student population;
- Write and Speak English proficiently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Successful experience as the instructor of record in a variety of undergraduate courses.
- Commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population;
- Awareness of pedagogical best practices
- Implementing and assessing varied and innovative pedagogies
- Record of meaningful mentorship of undergraduate students;
- Successful experience teaching a diverse student body
- Knowledge of effective strategies (e.g. culturally responsive or inclusive pedagogy, awareness of issues that may affect the success of minoritized students) supporting underrepresented groups;
- Commitment to the mission of Xavier University of Louisiana.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Description
Primary duties for this position include teaching four (12 credit hours) in-person undergraduate sociology courses each semester (fall/spring) encompassing 2-4 distinct courses including general required courses as well as specialized, upper-level offerings. In addition to an instructional focus on the candidate’s areas of specific expertise, teaching responsibilities may also include general sociology courses such as introductory, theory, and methods courses.
