Minimum Required Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, mechanical or chemical
- 5 years’ experience with heat transfer equipment (fired heaters, boilers, heat exchangers, similar type equipment, etc.)
- Experience developing multiple concurrent projects involving custom design work
- Proven track record of strong customer service skills and relationship management
- Proven track record of time management and organizational skills
- Familiarity with design standards such as API, ASME & ASTM
Desired Experience
- Experience with field service, startup assistance, and troubleshooting of fired heaters
- Experience designing fired heaters a plus
We are looking for a person with excellent communication and critical thinking skills who has plenty of initiative and a desire to constantly develop and improve products/processes. This person is a detail-oriented, motivated team player who can work independently and take the lead on projects. Travel for this role is required.
Job Functions:
The Applications Engineer (AE) role is to interpret customer inquiry requirements, generate designs that will: a) meet the client’s technical requirements, b) conform to customer specifications and c) conform to industry standards. The AE will be responsible for the overall design of custom-engineered equipment, estimation of that design and all related sales efforts through the point of sale. The AE’s responsibilities include business development and technical support with existing and prospective customers, assessment of their needs and promotion of the sale of XRG engineered solutions. Reporting to the Chief Advisory Officer, the Applications Engineer will participate as a member of the sales team, focusing on proposal development, process design and order acquisition. This will include:
- Business development, including sales trips and presentations
- Working closely with the client to determine their needs and promote the sale of XRG solutions
- Inquiry and specification reviews
- Initial review of client specifications
- Reconciliation of client specifications with industry / XRG standards
- System Design / Engineering
- Engineer superior solutions to complex challenges
- Value engineering
- Develop and grow a solid working knowledge of applicable API standards (API 530, 535, 560)
- Rating and design of fired heat transfer equipment
- Perform radiant and convective heat transfer, combustion and system hydraulics calculations
- Design modifications to existing equipment
- Cultivate a fundamental understanding ancillary equipment and instrumentation, such as fans and motors, heat exchangers, SCR's and burners
- Specification of ancillary systems / engineered components
- Seek and implement novel technologies where appropriate
- Cost and Schedule Development
- Develop Bills of Material and equipment / fabrication RFQs
- Condition bids from suppliers
- Build detailed project cost estimates and schedules
- Proposal development and bid packaging
- Contract negotiation, managing company risk and objectives
- Assistance developing interfaces between thermal rating programs, CFD tools, cost estimates and mechanical design software (Tekla, SolidWorks) to minimize proposal turnaround time, eliminate hand-off errors and improve design quality
- Project support after the point of sale, as applicable
- Collaboration with management, procurement, engineering, execution, and suppliers
- Assist with equipment commissioning and startups
This role will act as the primary point of contact with the client throughout the sales process, managing all technical and commercial aspects of the project.
