Silicon Photonics Active Component Designer

Xscape Photonics Inc
Santa Clara, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 3/27/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/25/2025

We are looking for an experienced Silicon Photonics Active Component Designer to drive the design, development, and characterization of active photonic components within our cutting-edge photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for advanced optical communications. In this role, you will design, optimize, and characterize active devices such as Mach-Zehnder modulators, ring modulators, and high-speed photodiodes. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure high-performance and scalable photonic solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of active silicon photonic components, including modulators (Mach-Zehnder and resonant), and high-speed photodiodes.
  • Perform and oversee simulations and modeling for active photonic structures, ensuring optimal performance and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with fabrication and process teams to address design constraints and optimize for process compatibility.
  • Define testing methodologies for active components and work with testing teams to validate performance, analyze data, and make improvements.
  • Stay informed about industry advancements and emerging technologies in silicon photonics, bringing innovative approaches to the design team.
  • Document design processes, specifications, and results, supporting knowledge transfer and future product enhancements.
  • Mentor and support junior designers, fostering a collaborative and growth-focused team environment.

Requirements:

Technical Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: Master’s or Ph.D. in Photonics or related fields.
  • Experience:
  • At least 5 years of industrial experience in silicon photonics with a focus on active component design.
  • Proven track record of designing, simulating, and optimizing active photonic devices in PICs.
  • In-depth understanding of active photonic design principles, including issues of bandwidth, linearity, control, and resonant tuning.

Skills:

  • Simulation & Design Tools: Proficiency in photonic simulation and design software such as Lumerical (FDTD, MODE, DEVICE), Tidy3D, and/or Ansys HFSS.
  • Fabrication Knowledge: Familiarity with silicon photonics fabrication processes, design rules, and process limitations, along with a practical understanding of process variations and their impact on device performance. Preference will be given to candidates who have contributed to tapeouts of active devices with multiple SiPho foundries.
  • Data Analysis & Optimization: Skilled in data analysis and scripting languages (Python, MATLAB) for design refinement and optimization based on testing results.

Leadership & Soft Skills:

  • Communication: Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and technical reporting.
  • Problem Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to overcoming design challenges.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in scaling PIC designs for production and familiarity with industry standards in silicon photonics for data communications or telecommunications applications.
  • Experience working with packaging and ASIC design teams to co-optimize high speed optoelectronic interfaces.
  • Experience with statistical analysis methods for applications ranging from data analysis to yield forecasting.
  • Experience with scripted layout tools such as Virtuoso (SKILL), GDSFactory, etc.

This is a rare opportunity to contribute to a dynamic team at the forefront of silicon photonics innovation. If you’re passionate about advancing optical technology and enjoy pushing the boundaries of photonic design, we’d love to hear from you!
