Mechanical Designer for Y-12 will be responsible for producing CAD drawings of HVAC Systems and Fire Sprinkler Systems in support of nuclear and non-nuclear projects at the Y-12National Security Complex.
Designer will prepare conceptual design and construction output documents to include the following:
- Installation Drawings (HVAC and Fire Sprinkler)
- Man-hour estimates
- Bills of material for cost estimating
- Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder to complete field walkdowns
The Mechanical Designer will be responsible for interpreting, organizing, and executing assignments and engineering designs for HVAC Systems and Fire Sprinkler Systems. The candidate will be expected to assist in gathering field data unique to each project. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, 3D Modeling, 2D CAD drafting, field walk downs, drawing layout, multi-discipline coordination, interference evaluation, and interfacing with AE firms. The designer must be proficient with developing drawings (plans, sections, details, Ventilation & Instrumentation Diagrams, and Airflow Diagrams) and providing general notes on design drawings.
A strong candidate for the Mechanical Designer position must have experience with design and layout of HVAC Systems and Fire Sprinkler Systems. This experience should include, but not limited to, duct routing, pipe routing, component selection, and sprinkler spacing. Experience with ASHRAE standards, SMACNA details, and NFPA standards is preferred.
Candidate must effectively and cooperatively work as a team member of an integrated project team and utilize sound time management. Field walkdowns will routinely be performed.

- Ten or more years of progressive, relevant experience in HVAC and/or Fire Sprinkler System Design.
- Technical knowledge of related engineering systems, applications of engineering and construction methods and materials, and engineering application of computers.
- Ability to plan, self-perform tasks and multi-task on multiple projects.
- The position requires the ability to present information clearly and effectively through the oral and written word and utilize automated workflow systems.
- Must be able to coordinate verification and validation of documents with technical and operations personnel prior to release for approval and implementation.
- Ability to develop and maintain historical information.
- Ability to prepare, interpret, maintain, and incorporate requirements of technical drawings and operating documents.
- Associate Degree and/or relevant education in a related discipline.
- Experience with 3D modeling is preferred.
- Experience with Smart Plant 3D software.
- Nuclear related design experience in an NRC or DOE regulated environment is desirable.
- Knowledgeable in DOE standards, including DOE O 420.1C, Facility Safety and DOE STD 1066-2016, Fire Protection.
- Familiarity with HASS fire protection hydraulic calculation program (or similar hydraulic calculation program).
- Familiarity with Trane Trace (or similar programs).
