What You'll Do
Metallurgical technicians in the Y-12 Development Metallurgical Engineering & Processing group should be capable of performing hands-on activities in the following areas:
General foundry activities including melting and casting, sawing, shearing, drilling, coating of crucibles and molds, cleaning of materials (solvent, acid, and caustic), pressing and swaging, and heat treating of depleted uranium and depleted uranium alloys to support general research and development activities. Other work type activities include taking inventory of materials (i.e. uranium, chemicals, equipment, etc.), handling/packaging of wastes (radiological/non-radiological), driving forklifts, using fixtures, hoists, etc., handling gas cylinders, and housekeeping and/or cleaning of work areas. Cleaning the inside of the furnaces, replacing thermocouples, replacing sensors and gauges, and furnace leak checking are other routine tasks.
Other hands-on work includes preparation of samples for metallographic examination and mechanical properties testing. Activities include sawing, mounting, grinding,and polishing of samples for follow-on microstructural evaluation using various tools such optical microscopes and other analytical instruments Samples are evaluated for mechanical properties using hardness testers, tensile testing, and other thermo-mechanical and thermo-physical instruments

Minimum Job Requirements
- Technician: Associate degree in related discipline: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
- OR a High school diploma with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience
