What You'll Do

  • Supervises Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) in minimizing personnel exposure and maintaining contamination control.
  • Ensures the principles of the Integrated Safety Management System and Integrated Safeguards and Security Management, Conduct of Operations requirements, and ALARA practices are used for all operations.
  • Ensures strict application of regulations for security and plant protection.
  • Directly interfaces with operations personnel and responds to problems in assigned facilities and ensures appropriate corrective actions taken.
  • Plans and schedules work of RCTs.
  • Supervises RCTs and ensures that RCTs understand requirements prior to performing activities Matches task requirements to training and qualifications and ensures all RCTs are qualified for assigned work.
  • Provides leadership in support of minimizing personnel exposure and maintaining contamination control.
  • Participates in investigations of accidents involving his/her employees and prepares reports as required.
  • Interfaces with operations personnel to communicate the status of RADCON programs and to make recommendations for improvement.
  • Responds promptly to problems in the assigned facility and ensures appropriate corrective actions are taken.
  • Issues Radiological Awareness Reports to document radiological problems and prescribes corrective actions as needed.
  • Participates in site emergency response positions.
  • Maintains position qualifications through drills and exercises and classroom training.
  • Handles all personnel matters within the work group.
  • Interviews; makes hiring recommendations; evaluates performance; coaches; counsels; and rewards and disciplines employees, as appropriate.
  • Conducts crew briefings, monitors timekeeping and absences and assigns overtime.
  • Participates in the development, review, and approval of procedures to ensure applicable requirements are instituted.
  • Assists in the development and communication of RADCON goals and provides leadership in their achievement.
  • Works with RADCON staff to solve problems and improve programs.
  • Reviews and interprets survey/monitoring data.
  • Provides direction and assists RCTs in radiological hazard analysis and the establishment of controls.
  • Participates in providing and establishing radiological entry control mechanisms (e.g., Radiological Work Permits, postings, radiological boundaries, etc.).
  • Provides on-the-job training for RCTs and review of RCT implementation of RADCON requirements.
  • Assesses areas of responsibility.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in science / technical field plus 5 years of Radiological Protection experience (including at least 1 year as a RCT Lead or RCT Supervisor).
  • OR Associate's degree in science / technical field plus 9 years of Radiological Protection experience (including at least 1 year as a RCT Lead or RCT Supervisor).
  • OR Master's degree in science / technical field plus 5 years of Radiological Protection experience (including at least 1 year as a RCT Lead or RCT Supervisor).
  • OR 13 or more years of education and/or relevant Radiological Protection experience (including at least 1 year as a RCT Lead or RCT Supervisor) may be considered to satisfy educational and years-of-experience requirements for this posting.
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (High School diploma and 3 years nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative). DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • RCT certification and a demonstrated working knowledge of radiological control methods, procedures, and equipment.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with a variety of functions, e.g., operations, maintenance, technical, and craft personnel.
  • Ability to supervise within a compliance-based environment of strictly disciplined operations.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which requires successful competition of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
