What are the responsibilities and job description for the DECKHAND position at Yacht Starship Dining Cruises?
Position is deemed safety sensitive and conforms to all United States Coast Guard standards and regulations for our industry. Employees will be onboard vessel away from shore and docks for a duration of 2-6 hours.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Responsible for the safety and well-being of dining cruise passengers while providing a safe and clean vessel for operations. Assist the Captain with all marine duties as well as responsibilities for maintaining and cleaning the exterior of the vessel, general janitorial, maintenance and navigation duties of the entire vessel. Passenger safety before, during and after cruises.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Arrive for assigned work on time.
- Perform and understand in-depth all aspects of the job duties of the Deckhand (a Working knowledge).
- Clean and prepare designated public areas by meeting established standards of cleanliness and propriety to assure guests satisfaction and maximize revenues.
- Be in proper uniform, neat and orderly. Have all required tools on hand.
- Maintain work areas clean and free of clutter, especially in the public areas or in the view of a guest.
- Clean and wipe windows, doors, walls, closets and fixtures in all public areas, hallways, often using ladders or stools to clean hard to reach areas, in order to maintain a clean, presentable and attractive facility at all times.
- Vacuum all public areas and hallways, operating vacuums weighing up to 25 lb., and lifting/removing heavy furniture in order to vacuum entire area of carpet, including underneath furniture and hard to reach places.
- Inspect all door locks to ensure they are in working order and immediately alert management to an unsecure or unsafe situation for the safety of guests and employees.
- Clean and inspect all public restrooms before, during and after cruises. Clean and wipe mirrors, stools, sinks, toilets, floors and door partitions. Restock all sanitary supplies.
- Empty and replace garbage bags in all garbage receptacles. Assist in removing all trash from vessels when needed.
- Assist in fuel supply and black water removal.
- Take on potable water.
- Have a working knowledge of bridge equipment, alarms and responses thereto.
- Responsible for assisting in the receipt and delivery of all supplies to the proper storage areas, i.e., kitchen, dry stores, etc.
- Assist Engineering with the repair and maintenance of the vessel.
- Responsible for security and safety at the gangway and associated passenger embarkation/disembarkation areas as directed by company policy.
- Monitor the activities of the passengers. Unsafe conduct, entering restricted areas and intoxication are not permitted. Report any and all unsafe conduct to the Captain immediately.
- Monitoring the vessel for safety

- Responsible for checking that all safety chains are in place.
- Inspect yacht for unsafe conditions, correcting and reporting (to the Captain) any that are found.
- Responsible for washing and cleaning the entire exterior of the yacht, including windows and decks.
- Responsible for painting and maintaining the exterior of the yacht, including chipping, scraping and priming.
- Responsible for mooring the vessel.
- Responsible for establishing a gangway as directed.
- Responsible for assisting the captain in navigation of the vessel, i.e., Calling numbers over the VHF marine radio.
- Maintain a positive, supportive work environment via effective, professional communication with co-workers.
- Support and follow all company policies, procedures and programs, including Yacht Hospitality System and Starship Safety.
- Promote good business principles by never discussing company business in public areas or with guests.
- Exhibits and encourages proper hygiene and sanitary habits.
- Is friendly, courteous and cheerful at all times.
- Aids other crewmembers and departments to contribute to the best overall operation of the Yacht.
- Fills station bill requirements and participates in drills regarding passenger safety.
- All other duties as assigned, requested or deemed necessary by management
NECESSARY JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years old, and have a valid state issued ID card.
- Must be able to remain on your feet for a period of 12 hrs and balance and maneuver in small, narrow, wet and slippery workspaces. Must be willing to work odd shifts throughout a 24hr day.
- Ability to assist in lowering or lifting passengers up to 225 pounds between the vessel and the water. Ability to swim, unassisted, a distance of at least 100 yards, and to tread water for at least three minutes.
- Should have a basic knowledge of the marine industry and boats in general. Must have a basic knowledge of janitorial duties and willing to perform them repetitively. Must be able to work with cleaning chemicals.
MATERIAL OR EQUIPMENT USED:
- Lines and rigging as found on standard vessels. Standard janitorial supplies, equipment and chemicals. Standard painting equipment and chemicals. Cleaning machines, hand trucks, garbage carts, deck winches and gangway booms.
EDUCATION/FORMAL TRAINING/EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent.
UNIFORMS
- Before or after cruises – company issued t-shirt with logo, shorts or jeans, solid color socks and black rubber-soled work shoes. Company issued hat is optional.
- During cruises – company issued white Navy CNT, black belt, gold buckle. Employee supplied black poly blend pants, black socks and black rubber-soled shoes. Company issued jacket if desired.
