What are the responsibilities and job description for the Code Enforcement Officer position at Yadkin County Government?
Essential Job Functions
An employee in this class inspects construction work in process of old and new buildings to enforce State codes for building construction including the four trade areas of building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical codes. Work involves daily field checks in an assigned area to inspect construction work in various stages of completion. Confers with architects, engineers, contractors, homeowners, other inspectors and plan reviewers involving construction, design, and use of buildings and structures related to the NC State Building Code and local ordinances. Compiles and interprets reports, data, and design to verify code compliance and advise homeowners, architects, engineers and contractors of the same.
Education and Experience
· High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by an apprenticeship program or technical training.
· Two years of building/construction work or trade-related experience.
· Ability to attain state certifications in Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical trades (County employment contract required for employees not possessing certifications).
· Valid Driver’s License.
· Preferred: Associate’s Degree, contractor or trade license, North Carolina or ICC Certification as Inspector in Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, and/or Building.
Working Conditions
Hours of work - Generally, Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm.
Occasional night and weekend work required.
Workplace Requirements -
Physical Requirements: Ability to stand, sit, climb, walk, bend, stoop, and lift up to 25 pounds on a regular basis (occasionally moving larger items that may weigh up to 35 lbs.). Able to operate in tight space (crawl space, attic, service areas, etc.).
· Able to work in varying environmental conditions including heat, rough terrain, cold, rain, dirt, etc.
· Able to communicate effectively with people of varying backgrounds, and establish effective working relationships with supervisors, the public, as well as other employees.
· Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods and practices involved in building and structural construction- as well as possible defects and faults in building and structural construction.
· Ability to operate office machines such as computer, copier, FAX, and scanner.
· Ability to record information, balance figures, and arrange/place records, reports and files into proper sequence.
· Ability to collect and interpret data.
· Ability to comprehend, understand and explain basic regulations and reasons behind building inspections and the issuance of permits.
· Ability to read and interpret building and site plans.
Special Notes Concerning This Position
May require occasional after-hours work including evenings, weekends, and holidays for emergency and shutdown situations.
If you do not have the certification at date of hire, standard certification in building trades will be required within 24 months of hire.
