Position Title: Juvenile Corrections Officer I
Location: Yakima County Juvenile Court
Pay Range: $21.92 - $27.80 per hour (AFSCME-87P Pay Plan, B22 Step 1-13)
Hiring Range: $21.92 - $23.26 per hour (AFSCME-87P Pay Plan, B22 Step 1-4 DOQ)

Yakima County Juvenile Court is seeking a Juvenile Corrections Officer I to provide safety and security for staff, the facility, and youth in the Yakima Juvenile Detention Facility. Gender-specific hiring preferences may apply to facilitate safer booking processes and same-gender pat-down searches while maintaining standards of sexual privacy.
This position requires flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, in a 24-hour locked-down facility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safety and security of staff, detainees, and the facility.
- Monitor detainee behavior and enforce facility rules.
- Conduct same-gender pat-down searches during the booking process.
- Respond to emergencies and maintain order within the facility.
- Participate in team discussions and contribute to detainee rehabilitation efforts.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Any combination of work experience, volunteer work, education, or family rearing that demonstrates the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License at the time of employment.
- Must pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT) administered by the Department. Requirements can be found at Physical Ability Test Standards.
- Successful completion of a criminal background investigation, fingerprinting, polygraph examination, and general employment verification.
- Tuberculosis testing and a Washington State Food Handler’s Permit at the time of employment.
- Washington State Basic First Aid and CPR certification within two months of employment.
- Ability to work varying shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Conversational proficiency in Spanish as spoken in the Yakima County area.
- Experience working in detention or corrections.
- Education in a related field.
- Certification in Red Cross Basic First Aid with CPR (may substitute for WA State First Aid and CPR training).
- Successful completion of the Juvenile Corrections Personnel Academy administered by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission within six months of hire.
