Position Summary:
Sea Garden -Environmental Technician Trainee, Will Assist the Sea Garden Manager in all aspects of a sea gardens-restoration of a Clam Garden at Ankau. As well as assisting in the Ocean water test as assigned, including, Ocean Acidification (weekly) Monitoring, HAB (weekly), assisting in intertidal shellfish biomass assessment, field work schedule revolves around tides, river and weather conditions and may not always occur during typical business hours. Technicians may travel into the field with equipment up to 50 lbs. Will also assist the Manager to conduct Sea Garden Traditional Ecological Knowledge interviews for the sea garden. The trainee will be trained in all aspects of the position.
Essential Functions:
· Will be trained to assist with office Computer organization, reports, newsletters as well as pre-field and post-field organizing for Daily field work, including but not limited to:
· Learning to assist in data entry and analysis and assist with outreach support, scheduling pre-field and post-field organizing for Harmful Algae Bloom Monitoring, Shellfish sampling events, shipping out all samples in a timely manner.
· Learning how to do Sampling kit preparations, notification to lab and shipping samples, as well as learning to enter raw data into Microsoft excel database.
· Assisting Infield/sample gear organizing and maintenance using checklists and logs. coordinating field work schedule and transportation logistics.
· Will assist Manager to Interview Elders, about environmental questions, such as past Sea Gardens in the Yakutat area.
· Other field duties as assigned, which may include but not limited to, water quality program, compost program and fisheries program.
· Attend Training as needed
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Knowledge of safe ATV operational use preferred
· Knowledge of or be willing to learn bear awareness and all field safety techniques
· Knowledge of living and/or working outdoors in Southeast Alaska.
· Skill in effective written and oral communicator, with the ability to interact with diverse stakeholders, including elders, staff, community members, and regulatory agencies
· Skilled in attention to detail. Good record-keeping, good organizational computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office, d, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
· Ability to working in moving water, bear habitat, increment weather able to work flexible hours at times of scheduled field work that may take place on weekends, early mornings, or late evenings according to tides
· Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
· Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
· Ability to exhibit timeliness; must be able and willing to show up on time at an agreed-upon location.
· Ability and experience working outdoors in inclement weather.
· Ability to carry at least 50lbs for extended periods of time over rugged terrain.
· Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment and effective written and oral communication as well as, strong attention to detail, and good record-keeping.
· Ability to work the flexible hours required of a field work schedule which is weather and tidal dependent. This may include working earlier or later than typical office hours and may (very rarely) include weekends.
· Ability to work in an office setting for extended periods of time in addition to working in the field.
· Ability to conduct themselves professionally in the workspace, have good organizational skills, good record-keeping skills.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Work environment is diverse, encompassing both indoor and outdoor settings. While office duties involve typical desk work, computer tasks, and participation in meetings, a significant portion of the role entails fieldwork. This fieldwork exposes the employee to a range of weather conditions, from heat to cold, along with rain and wind elements.
Fieldwork also entails physical labor, necessitating the lifting, carrying, and maneuvering of equipment and materials, some of which may weigh up to 50 pounds. The terrain may be uneven, requiring physical agility to navigate effectively. Additionally, the employee must be prepared to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and kneel for extended periods during fieldwork and will give Immediate notification of on-the-job injuries.
Manual dexterity and keen hand-eye coordination are indispensable for tasks like operating equipment and conducting compost monitoring and sampling. Moreover, the role demands sufficient vision, hearing, and verbal communication skills to execute duties safely and effectively. The employee must be able to read, write, speak and hear. Supervisory and Management Responsibility:
This position has no supervisory responsibility or authority.
Minimum Qualifications:
· High school diploma or GED required.
· Must be 18 years of age or older.
· Must be able to pass a National Criminal and State background check.
· Valid Alaska Driver’s License.
