Description

The South Asian Studies Council at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University invites applications for a Lector in Telugu beginning July 1, 2025, for a three- year term, renewable, with rank dependent on qualifications/experience. Full-time Lectors at Yale teach six courses or the equivalent per academic year, which is often realized as five term courses with a sixth course equivalent of advising and/or other administrative service.

Primary duties each academic year will include teaching elementary courses (2) and intermediate courses (2) in Telugu in four learning-skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The fifth course will focus on literary, social, political, cultural and/or sociolinguistics topics related to Telugu (as determined on the basis of the appointee’s qualifications and expertise). For the sixth course equivalent, the Lector will advise students and participate in program building of South Asian Studies at Yale, specifically, in developing overseas language and other study opportunities. They will also engage in developing the broad curriculum and the pedagogic materials for Telugu.

We are especially interested in candidates whose language and content expertise will complement existing cross-disciplinary scholarship in the Council. The candidate will also teach through Yale’s shared course initiative, in which students from partner institutions participate online in beginning and advanced language courses.

Lectors in the South Asian Studies Council are encouraged to participate in the wide range of professional development opportunities offered through the MacMillan Center, the Center for Language Study, the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office. Full-time lectors are eligible for Yale’s generous package of benefits, including health coverage. Salary is commensurate with experience and background.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have: 1) native or near-native fluency in Telugu; 2) proficiency in English; 3) a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent by the time of hire; and 4) some teaching experience at the university level. It is strongly preferred that applicants have: 1) an M.A. or other advanced degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. South Asian languages, literatures, linguistics); 2) experience in teaching Telugu as a second language in a college or university environment; and 3) demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for in-class teaching/acquisition, familiarity with language training program in South Asia, experience with technologically-aided language learning methods and their development, interest in the broader field of South Asian Studies and/or other relevant disciplines.

Application Instructions

Applicants should submit a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; a one-page teaching statement; evidence of teaching excellence (e.g., syllabi, course materials, evaluations, teaching video); and three letters of recommendation.

We will accept applications immediately with review beginning on March 1, 2025 and continuing until the selections are final.

All information from the applicant should be submitted electronically through Interfolio: https://apply.interfolio.com/163546
