Operates extra-corporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patient's cardiopulmonary/, circulatory function and ensures the proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables. Scope of Practice: Duties upon prescription by a physician and in accordance with hospital policy include, but are not limited to, the safe performance and /or management of:, Extra-corporeal circulation/cardiopulmonary support, Counter-pulsation, Circulatory support/ventricular assistance, Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Blood conservation techniques/auto-transfusion, Myocardial preservation, Anticoagulation and hematologic monitoring/analysis, Physiological monitoring/analysis, Blood gas and blood chemistry monitoring/analysis, Induction of hypothermia/hyperthermia with reversal, Hemodilution, Hemo-filtration/Ultra-filtration, Administration of medications, blood components and anesthetic agents via the extra-corporeal circuit, Documentation associated with described duties, Other duties may include: Isolated limb/organ perfusion, Electro-physiological analysis, Organ preservation, Dialysis assistance. Responsibilities
- 1. 1. Prepares for cardiac and non-cardiac procedures
- 1.1 Assesses patient medical status and calculates perfusion requirements (i.e. blood flow, BSA, CI)
- 2. Conducts Perfusion Techniques
- 2.1 Monitors perfusion procedures and patient status to maintain appropriate patient vital signs, flows, temperature, pressure, etc
- 3. Education
- 3.1 Maintains CCP status through meetings, inservices and publications. Keeps current with new developments in perfusion technology and cardiac surgery 1.2. Participates in the teaching of perfusion students, OR staff, medical and nursing students.
- 4. Communication and Interaction
- 4.1 Works well as a team member, lending assistance when needed
- 5. Competency Checklist or In-service Review

- 6. Clinical Lead Role
- 6.1 Work with the medical directors and leadership for the Newborn Intensive Care Unit and Children?s Heart Center programs assisting with efforts to achieve and maintain quality and assurance goals and standards.
- 7. Additional Responsibilities
- 7.1 Coordination of supply management with appropriate on site personal to ensure adequate levels and minimize outdates
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Graduation from an accredited school of cardiopulmonary perfusion with a masters degree or a bachelors degree program
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of two (2) years of experience as an adult perfusionist, a minimum of one (1) year experience as a pediatric perfusionist, or a certificate degree program with experience in Cardioperfusion.
LICENSURE
Connecticut State Perfusion License/ABCP Certified Clinical Perfusionist.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Anatomy and cardio-respiratory systems, specialized medical, mechanical and electronic equipment, medical, clinical and surgical procedures and practices, hospital organization and administrative policies and procedures . Requires analytical, organizational and oral and written communication skills. Achieve/maintain BLS/CPR certification
Additional Information
Perfusion Certification, leadership experience or role preferred.
