The staff hospitalist must be able to competently care for the hospitalized patient throughout the hospital stay. This includes emergency evaluation and triage in addition to admission to the hospital and formation of a differential diagnosis. It is essential to formulate a comprehensive care plan in accordance with the most up to date, evidence based protocols. The staff hospitalist must possess excellent communication skills and exhibit these through communication with primary medical doctors as well as in house consultant physicians and colleagues. The hospitalist must interact in a professional manner with all members of the patient care team. The hospitalist physician should participate in education of the housestaff physicians, students, nurses and all members of the patient care team. The hospitalist should keep high quality care and patient safety in mind while transitioning the patient back to the outpatient setting upon discharge. The hospitalist shall deliver the above with service excellence and patient satisfaction in mind.

Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient care :
- Admits adult patients to the hospital for private primary care physicians.
- Conducts comprehensive examinations and evaluations and makes treatment decisions.
- Communicates regularly and effectively with the primary care physicians.
- Provides general internal medicine consultation to non-internal medicine physicians.
- Provides primary and consultative in-patient medical care.
- Takes call as necessary to provide 24 / 7 coverage.
- Coordinates care of patients through appropriate collaboration with other physicians.
- Enrolls in all Managed Care plans with which the Hospital participates.
- Teaches and Role Models :
- Provides leadership in the Department of Medicine and the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
- Directly supervises and teaches medical residents and students.
- Role models excellence in service to patients and primary care physicians.
- Provides leadership to the Medical Staff in the use of Physician Computerized Order Entry.
- Participates in formal medical education.
- Provides in-service education on hospital based best practice to nursing staff.
- Assists the Residency Program Director in revising the curriculum.
- Completes mandatory hospital / unit based in-services.
- Helps identify goals for achievement consistent with the Department and Hospital's goals.
- Actively participates in own performance appraisal.
- Demonstrates the ability to accept constructive criticism.
- Evaluates Outcomes of In-patient Medical Care :
- Identifies problem prone clinical practices and initiates solutions.
- Works collaboratively with the Hospitalist Director and others in Process Improvement studies.
- Evaluates outcomes and identifies improvements in care.
- Performs and coordinates clinical documentation audits.
- Enhances academic and clinical productivity through publication and presentation.
- Coordinates studies with the Internal Medicine Residency and other providers.
- Demonstrates Leadership Skills :
- Works collaboratively with the Hospitalist Director and Program Director.
- Works collaboratively on new in-patient programs and services.
- Works collaboratively with the Nursing staff to maintain a safe environment.
- Utilizes effective time management skills.
- Participates on Hospital committees and CQI teams.
- Meets volume goals set by the Hospital.
- Maintains up to date knowledge and skills in hospital based medical practice.
- Ensures respectful treatment of all patients and their families.
- Participates in interdisciplinary rounds to impact patient outcomes.
- Improves communication with all stakeholders.
- Increases service to patients, families, and staff.
- Increases efficiency and decreases waste in patient care.
- Increases production through utilization management.
- Participates in committees related to patient care.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Medical Degree (MD, DO) and Internal Medicine Residency completion.
EXPERIENCE
Inpatient Care of the Medical Patient.
LICENSURE
Board Certification in Internal Medicine within one year of hire.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Procedural skills desirable but not required.
PHYSICAL DEMAND
MMR is required. Varivax or evidence of prior chicken pox is required. Hepatitis B (or signed declination) is required for those with potential exposure to blood / body fluids. Tdap and influenza vaccination are strongly encouraged. All shifts including overnight.
