Assistant University Chaplain

Position Focus :

The Assistant University Chaplain is a key member of the Chaplaincy staff in creating an inclusive and welcoming community for all and ensuring the spiritual, ethical, intellectual, and social welfare of students, faculty and staff. The Assistant University Chaplain works primarily with undergraduate students from diverse religious backgrounds and none – building interfaith programing, supporting smaller religious groups, and developing religious literacy opportunities. However, they will also be called on to provide pastoral care to the entire university community (undergraduates, graduate and professional students, staff and faculty). The Assistant University Chaplain is responsible for running undergraduate programming for the office. They serve as a representative for the Chaplain’s office across campus and collaborate with colleagues on a range of programs, services and new initiatives.

Essential Duties

Develops and implements educational, religious, and spiritual programs for students from Yale College and the University’s graduate and professional schools, and for other members of the University community. Plans, coordinates, and organizes community service and community building activities. Works closely with the University Chaplain and all members of the chaplaincy team to create and implement multi-faith programs and other emerging initiatives. Provides guidance and pastoral care to students and student groups on a range of religious, spiritual, and faith-based issues. Serves as a resource to students and other members of the University community. Coordinates outreach and communication efforts including preparing and supervising the production of promotional materials and / or publications, web site design and content, designing ads and fliers, and developing plans and schedules for release of publicity materials. Serves on various committees and attends professional meetings, including but not limited to Yale Religious Ministries. As needed, presides at weddings, memorial services, and other religious services and events. May supervise exempt and non-exempt employees, as well as student employees and / or volunteers. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in Divinity from a member seminary or divinity school of the Association of Theological Schools or an equivalent advanced degree in theology or religious studies from an accredited college / university and two years of experience in inter-religious work, work with young adults, and / or work in a higher education setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Strong commitment to and understanding of the needs and concerns of students, faculty and staff and the ability to provide pastoral care and leadership support to this diverse community.

Required Skill / Ability 2 :

Excellent writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills, as well as crisis management skills with proven ability to work in a multi-religious chaplaincy environment.

Required Skill / Ability 3 :

Outstanding organizational skills with ability to handle multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.

Required Skill / Ability 4 :

Creativity in imagining new initiatives and / or new ways of pursuing existing goals.

Required Skill / Ability 5 :

Diplomacy, sensitivity, and the ability to respond empathetically and professionally in a range of situations. Ability to exercise discretion and to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :

Experience in a college or university setting preferred.
