Position Focus :
The Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Health and Performance is responsible for overseeing all aspects of athletic medicine and sports performance programs at Yale University. This position will oversee health, safety, and optimal performance of student-athletes. They will provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight of the athletic medicine and sports performance departments. They will also serve as a liaison to mental health and counseling including the embedded athletics mental health counselor.
Essential Duties
1. Provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight of the athletic medicine and sports performance departments. 2. Serve as a liaison to mental health and counseling, including the embedded athletics mental health counselor. 3. Develop, implement, and evaluate short and long-term goals, strategies, objectives, and policies for the athletic medicine and sports performance programs. 4. Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and university policies and regulations regarding student-athlete health and safety. 5. Coordinate with the executive team to align athletic medicine and sports performance departmental goals with the athletics department's and the university's broader mission. 6. Foster a culture of open communication and collaboration among athletic medicine, strength and conditioning, coaching staff, and other relevant constituents. 7. Liaison and partner between medical providers, athletic personnel, and student-athletes to ensure cohesive care and performance strategies. 8. Ensure ongoing education for coaches and student-athletes on health and safety topics. 9. Develop and manage budgets related to athletic medicine and sports performance. 10. Oversee outside sports performance / medical providers to ensure that the care provided supports the vision of the Department of Athletics. Athletic Medicine : 1. Oversee the athletic medicine staff and act as the primary liaison to all medical personnel, including the head team physician. Oversee hiring of staff and professional development. Will serve as the athletic trainer for select team(s). 2. Provide strategic oversight and direction to the athletic medicine staff, inclusive of athletic trainers and physical therapists. Responsible for the overall vision, development, implementation, and assessment of athletic medicine services, including medical care and operation of athletic training rooms which includes prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation for varsity student-athletes. 3. Partners with athletic administration, coaches, staff, student-athletes, and other campus professionals to develop and advance athletic medicine services and student-athlete health and wellness. 4. Implements measures to prevent injuries and prepare student-athletes for practice and competition. 5. Works with athletic medicine staff to refer student-athletes to team physicians as appropriate and implements physicians’ instructions for managing athletic injuries. 6. Communicates professionally and effectively across a large, diverse population including, but not limited to, all student-athletes, fellow staff, athletic training students, physicians, coaches, and other athletic medicine umbrella practitioners. 7. Ensure comprehensive medical records are maintained for all student-athletes. 8. Develop protocols for emergency care and collaborate with medical professionals on concussion management and return-to-play decisions. 9. Liaison with the compliance and finance offices to ensure the implementation of the secondary insurance policy and NCAA post-eligibility insurance. Sports Performance : 1. Oversee the sports performance department. In conjunction with the Director of Sports Performance and Student-Athlete Innovation, assist the Director of Sports Performance with hiring staff and professional development. 2. Work with sports performance staff to utilize evidence-based training methods and techniques to enhance athletic performance, injury prevention, and recovery. 3. Work with the Director of Sports Performance to ensure the development of outcome-driven student-athlete training programs specific to the demands of the sports and injury considerations. 4. Ensure sports performance staff provides direction and guidance to student-athletes regarding their performance.
Required Education and Experience
Master's degree in athletic training, sports medicine, exercise science, or a related field and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill / Ability 1 :
Strong knowledge of athletic medicine principles, injury prevention strategies, rehabilitation protocols, strength and conditioning techniques, nutrition guidelines, and mental health best practices.
Required Skill / Ability 2 :
Excellent organizational, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with coaches, medical professionals, student-athletes, and other stakeholders to achieve program goals and objectives. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse and fast-paced environment.
