Position Focus :

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in Yale College and working in close collaboration with the Faculty Director, the Associate Director of Education Studies Program provides administrative leadership to the program, collaborates with faculty colleagues, teaches and advises undergraduate students, and engages with local and national education leaders. This hybrid role of administration and teaching requires an entrepreneurial spirit, flexibility, and a range of skills to sustain a multidisciplinary academic program. This position carries an instructional faculty appointment as a lecturer in an appropriate academic department at Yale.

Together with the Faculty Director, provides dynamic leadership for Education Studies. Works with faculty and staff from departments, schools, and programs throughout the University to develop curriculum and other intellectual opportunities for the study of education. For example, develops a comprehensive and sustainable strategic plan for Education Studies Program, including curricular needs, faculty and student engagement, and community building, coordinates Advisory Committee meetings, and faculty advising to support the program’s goals.

Together with the Faculty Director, collaborates with the relevant University partners, including Office of Development, Office of New Haven Affairs, Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, Office of Career Services, Yale Alumni Association, and others to meet the goals and needs of the Education Studies Program.

Leads day-to-day administration of the Education Studies Program, including managing admissions, curriculum and budget, student workers, event planning, communication needs, student professional development, and other activities as needed.

Together with the Faculty Director, oversees the program registrar, lecturers, senior capstone coordinator, and the New Haven Partner Teachers Program to bridge the Education Studies curriculum and students with these initiatives.

Develops and teaches courses in the program, one or two courses per semester, for a total of three per year (including at least one introductory survey course) and advises senior capstone projects.

May perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

1. Directs, monitors, and assesses needs and directs the application of resources of an administrative University office dealing with one or more major functional areas. 2. Directs and implements solutions to problems that are routine to complex in nature and that affect multiple functional areas of responsibility. 3. Plans and / or participates in planning University activities on a long-term basis to comply with University goals and objectives. 4. Establishes and implements consistent university-wide policies in multiple functional areas of responsibility. 5. Ensures that University office policies and procedures are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. 6. Develops and monitors goals and objectives for managerial and professional staff in compliance with University strategies. 7. Directs a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and six years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Required Skill / Ability 1 :

In-depth knowledge of current trends in education (K – 12). Demonstrated ability to successfully communicate with constituents in both oral and written communication and strong attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills.

Required Skill / Ability 2 :

Strong managerial and leadership skills. Strong organizational skills including planning, organizing and problem solving. Ability to work well under pressure. Ability to work independently, as well as with an active advisory committee. Detail-oriented and resourceful with strong multitasking skills. Proactive and self-starting, exhibiting leadership and initiative.

Required Skill / Ability 3 :

Demonstrated ability to administer programs in a higher-education setting.

Required Skill / Ability 4 :

Ability to work well with diverse groups of students, staff, university faculty and schoolteachers.

Required Skill / Ability 5 :

Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Drupal. Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and embrace emerging technology, new systems, concepts and processes. Proven ability to champion change and successful guide others.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :

or in a relevant field and five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Teaching experience in a K – 12 school and teaching education courses in a higher-education setting.
