Position Focus :
Under the direction and supervision of the Biotechnology Associate III of the Yale Center for Genome Analysis (YCGA), lead a team of staff and carry out library prep and sequence production using the sequencers. Additionally, they will lead R&D efforts in protocol development, robotics and LIMS systems implementation. This position involves work to be performed in a core lab set-up where the same assay will be performed routinely. Must have in-depth knowledge in molecular biology, next-generation sequencing library preparation technologies. Directly supervise staff and function as a manager / team leader for Next-Generation sequencing production. Interact with the Administrative Supervisor of the facility on all administrative issues including but not limited to staffing, temporary / casual usage, resolution of workflow and staff issues, performance management, scheduling, work rules, University policy and bargaining unit interpretation, etc. Interact with the Biotechnology Associate III Sequencing Operations as well as the Associate Director of YCGA on a daily basis to co-ordinate and provide updates on the sequencing schedule. Maintain / establish Standard Operating Procedures and develop general policies regarding sequencing operations and workflows. Carry out sequencing production and maintain equipment. Troubleshoot and resolve sequencing equipment issues with technical support. Test and validate new protocols. Perform literature searches to determine current trends in next-generation sequencing operation and remain pro-active in adapting appropriate protocols. Communicate with investigators and collaborators. Provide technical assistance to the users. Interact with various YCGA operation teams. Develop a strong collaborative team environment between library prep and sequencing groups. Provide orientation and training to new lab personnel including instruction in laboratory protocols and provide information and practical assistance as required. Assist in the implementation of laboratory information management system (LIMS). Verify that items on YCGA invoices have been received in good condition and maintain appropriate records. Maintain the sequencing reagent inventory. Perform monthly billing as required. Assist with gathering information for grants and proposals and provide support with editing. Assist with sequencing data handling and primary data processing. Interpret and generate reports summarizing sequencing results and maintain quality controls, including the quarterly sequencing report. May perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties
1. Manages the daily activities of a research resource laboratory. Oversees the scheduling, use, and availability of instrumentation, supplies, and specialized work areas. 2. Carries out biotechnology research design, develop, and modify procedures and instrument operating programs. 3. Develops, interprets, and analyzes the results of biotechnological analyses and / or syntheses. 4. Investigates, analyzes, and evaluates alternative instrumentation, methodologies and techniques to maintain a state-of-the-art biotechnology resource laboratory. 5. Recommends and develops new protocols and initiates and adapts new techniques to resolve problems. 6. Conducts research to determine the feasibility and scope of providing new / revised services. Develops and evaluates new techniques and equipment. 7. Prepares budgets and reports pertaining to laboratory costs and income. 8. Determines and establishes policies and procedures on laboratory safety consistent with University safety regulations. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or other related discipline and three years of experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Required Skill / Ability 1 :
In-depth knowledge in molecular biology; Experience with next-generation sequencing library preparation technologies and prior experience with lab automation; Demonstrated supervisory ability.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :
Proven experience in operation of sequencers, library preparation for sequencing and using data analysis pipeline is desirable.
