Position Focus :

Yale University seeks a talented and experienced fundraiser to continue to build a fundraising program for the Whitney & Betty Center for International and Area Studies. Reporting to the Deputy Director of MacMillan Center, the Director of Development engages and solicits prospective donors for gifts and plays a central role in collaborating with the Center’s staff and fundraisers across the university.

Dedicated to pursuing excellence in research, teaching, and capacity-building across societies to bring about a more informed, inclusive, and flourishing world, the MacMillan Center is the international hub for the Yale community. It houses seven regional councils that connect faculty across departments and disciplines who share interests on specific geographic regions as well as a set of global programs that promote scholarship and exchanges across a range of transnational themes.

In accordance with the Center’s mission and strategic plan, the Director of Development is responsible for setting and communicating the Center’s fundraising priorities. This includes working with the leadership of each of the councils and with the global programs team on targeted fundraising opportunities as well as raising funds for the Center. The Director also oversees and manages high-profile visits to campus and other activities to maximize MacMillan’s visibility and inspire and strengthen relationships with donors, friends, and alumni. The Director is responsible for enriching the Center’s relationships with alumni and friends around the world through programming, events, and in collaboration with the Center’s Director and Deputy Director, the Director of Development will create and manage an External Advisory Board of high-net-worth individuals.

The Director is responsible for written communications including donor correspondence, proposals, administrator briefings, and stewardship. The Director collaborates closely with the central Office of Development and the MacMillan leadership team on creative engagement strategies including conducting research, writing, coordinating events, developing itineraries, reporting on activities, and tracking expenditures.

This is a hybrid role with a minimum in-office expectations of three days per week. It requires some overnight and international travel to meet with donors and attend / staff events, including occasional nights and weekends. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned fundraiser who is excited about embracing the diverse nature of Yale’s international center.

Essential Duties

1. Responsible for planning, managing, and executing all aspects of development effort. 2. Works closely with senior management to develop both short- and long-term fundraising goals and strategies, including a strategic plan for building a post-campaign pipeline in anticipation of the next campaign. 3. Works with staff to develop and implement plans to carry out the organization's goals and strategies, including establishing specific activity goals for all phases of the donor / prospect lifecycle (cultivation, solicitation, closure and stewardship). 4. Directs and grows a team of development professionals responsible for generating an increased volume of successful development activities and establishing a culture that encourages ever improving levels of performance and responsiveness to donors. 5. Develops strong ties with the faculty in order to understand and support the organization's programs and mission. 6. Manages engagement of faculty, administrators, and University officials in fundraising efforts. 7. Manages and staffs the senior management development activities and calendar to ensure maximum deployment. 8. Personally maintains a significant portfolio of leadership and principal gift prospects. 9. Participates in the development of strategy and content for all development publications and events. 10. If requested, develops and maintains relationships with members of the School Fund Board, if in existence. 11. Works regularly and cooperatively with other development offices to ensure overall development priorities, plans, and initiatives are coordinated. 12. Serves as the liaison with other development offices to provide information on organization needs and to develop strategies for prospects that are staffed centrally. 13. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree and ten years of related work experience in an academic institution or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience.

Required Skill / Ability 1 :

Demonstrated experience cultivating and closing major gifts and / or grants for related work. Experience brokering partnerships with universities, bi and multilateral institutions, and / or donors.

Required Skill / Ability 2 :

Comfort and demonstrated experience in representing the interests of an organization in high level. Ability to represent the Center professionally, as demonstrated through communication, conduct and attire.

Required Skill / Ability 3 :

Excellent organizational, planning and project management and implementation skills. Proven success in strategic planning and developing projects from conception to completion. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with exceptional attention to detail.

Required Skill / Ability 4 :

Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.

Required Skill / Ability 5 :

Demonstrated positive attitude and commitment to working as a member of a center-wide team. The ideal candidate should have the ability to understand, communicate, and effectively interact with people across cultures. Being open to learning about different dimensions of diversity and exhibiting positive attitudes towards cultural differences.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :

Masters or other advanced degree in a relevant field, and experience working within an academic institution, government or non-profit. Proficiency in one or more foreign language. International academic or life experience ( a related degree or time spent abroad).
