Position Focus :
As a key managerial role, the Manager, Landscape and Grounds, provides senior-level leadership over the Landscape and Grounds Management unit, including supervision and management of grounds maintenance activities over 350 acres of the three campuses of University properties. The Manager leads, inspires, and manages a team of 50 (supervisors and staff), providing all aspects of grounds maintenance and coordinating services with customers and service providers. The Manager develops and implements training programs to include safety training, general landscaping education, and sustainable landscape programs and initiatives, and develop procedures and processes to continually improve service and quality. In addition, this leader will be responsible for policy and procedure protocols and emergency response for all weather conditions and other events that might alter normal operating conditions on campus. Please note : This position does not include grounds management of Yale’s Golf Course.
Essential Duties
1. Provides leadership, supervision, and coordination for a staff of supervisors providing daily maintenance and services to the assigned areas to include but not limited to the University’s main campus, School of Medicine, West Campus, athletic fields, equipment maintenance repair facility, waste and recycling, and other University owned, leased, or rented Fosters a culture of teamwork both within Facilities Operations and with other Develops and implements sustainable landscape programs and initiatives and coordinates department activities with the University’s principals responsible for developing University sustainability Manages and leads various landscaping and construction projects. Plans and coordinates repairs, renovations and like activities. Consults as needed with other supervisors, trades people, planners, architects, and engineers for the timely and cost effective completion of work. Provides cost estimates on services and repairs as needed. Reviews project requirements, determining the deployment of supervision and trades people, work methods and procedures, tools, equipment, and other materials Develops policy and procedure protocols and supervises emergency response for all weather conditions and natural disasters, such as snow, ice, wind, rain, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other events that might alter normal operating conditions on campus. The director, supervisors, and grounds employees are considered essential staff and need to be on campus during such Develops and implements training programs to include safety training and general landscaping Coordinates services with both external and internal service providers. Meets with faculty, department chairs, Residential College Masters, business managers, vendors, internal providers, and Develops and implements plans to support University programs, activities, and events, to include, but not limited to, commencement, reunions and alumni events, opening and closing of school, summer programs and conferences, and athletic sporting Monitors material purchases and costs from vendors. Coordinates with Materials Management / Purchasing department as well as vendors to select, bid out and purchase materials, tools, and equipment. Assures an adequate inventory of in stock supplies. Coordinates supply and material acquisition and distribution to work teams. Provides input and feedback on the quality of work delivered by contractors. Coordinates with Materials Management for supply and material acquisition and distribution to work May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field and eight years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and Experience with software tools such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, Timekeeping / Payroll.
Required Skill / Ability 1 :
Proven ability to develop and implement sustainable landscape programs and initiatives. Proven ability to manage and lead various landscaping-focused construction projects.
Required Skill / Ability 2 :
Proven ability to provide strong administrative management to assess and maintain staffing needs, deal with employee relations, and service the needs of University customers.
Required Skill / Ability 3 :
Proven ability to manage and coordinate activities of supervisors and staff engaged in planning and scheduling of grounds maintenance services.
Required Skill / Ability 4 :
Proven ability to develop and manage scheduling, word processing, and spreadsheet documents and reports. Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all organizational levels.
Required Skill / Ability 5 :
Ability to work irregular hours (as the job mandates), including emergency responses, and for special events such as move-in, move-out, commissioning, start-ups, commencement, reunions, etc.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :
Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture or Design. Experience with sustainable landscape methodology.
Preferred Licenses or Certifications :
Commercial Supervisor Pesticide license 3(a) or 3(b) is REQUIRED. If not licensed, must be license-eligible and must obtain license during first 90 days.
