Position Focus :
The Managing Editor, Yale Medicine will manage a nimble, high-producing digital content team responsible for ;website content (including impactful and exceptional-quality consumer-facing feature stories and videos). Yale Medicine, which comprises more than 1,700 physicians, is the clinical faculty practice at Yale School of Medicine (YSM), one of the country's leading centers for biomedical research, advanced clinical care, and medical education.
This position will report to the Director of Content Strategy, partner with a community of world-class doctors, researchers, and educators with the goal of increasing the reputation and awareness of Yale School of Medicine among the general public, patients, peer institutions, the media, and potential corporate, foundation, and individual donors, while also driving revenue for Yale Medicine by producing strategic patient education content and elevating its status as an academic multispecialty clinical practice. The Managing Editor will be responsible for managing the day-to-day audience-centric, metrics-driven strategy and output of a unit responsible for engaging, high-quality text and infographic content for daily distribution over a consumer-facing website and multiple social media channels.
Responsibilities : Manage—in conjunction with the leadership team and consistent with guidelines and standards established for YSM—a dynamic, professional, efficient, and integrated editorial operation producing top-notch, professional-standard, fast-turnaround text content. Collaborate closely with the YSM Managing Editor to implement an integrated editorial strategy that showcases Yale Medicine’s excellence as an academic multispecialty medical practice. Incorporate SEO best practices in planning and executing content published on the YM website. Utilize analytics across the operation to understand and benchmark content consumption, user behavior, and staff performance and priorities. Update editorial style and standards, per YSM guidelines. Continually refine a distinctive voice and tone for all YM content. Maintain the consistency of the aforementioned, with a team of staff and freelance writers. Assign and edit various content types, including short- and long-form feature stories about the YSM community of patients, advocates, doctors, and caregivers. Assign and edit doctor profiles and similar types of short-form informational content. Produce and package content for a broad consumer audience so that it is clear, informative, and compelling for each channel or platform. Help to develop and execute editorial calendars; lead story planning meetings. Collaborate on budgeting and staffing schedules. Shape and nurture talent, helping them develop their voices and roles. Help to create a culture of transparency, collaboration, and accountability.

Essential Duties
1. Take primary responsibility for the function, design, and communications excellence of the school’s complex web environment. (The website has grown tremendously in complexity and scope in the past two years, and the responsibility of this position has grown roughly tenfold. This mission-critical communications platform requires high-level oversight to ensure communications excellence, technological quality, and continuing improvement and development. 2. Work with the IT department and outside vendors to ensure all facets of the school’s portal, external site, admitted students sites, and center websites are performing well. Work with content creators to create innovative, distinctive, and effective online communications. Collaborate with departments and other groups to understand their communications needs and develop solutions. Coordinate with the School’s new IT project manager to ensure school and departmental priorities are met and resources are used judiciously. 3. Assess new and ongoing projects for value to the school and prioritize the work of the department and outside vendors to achieve maximum return. Understand the needs of both individual departments and the school and formulate plans to achieve both. Make strategic recommendations to the director and other senior leaders about resource deployment and prioritization. 4. Supervise the Senior Web and Photography Editor, the Web / Multimedia Producer, and the internal communications specialist and create a cohesive team environment. Draw on necessary resources across the Communications department and other areas of the school to complete projects that advance the mission of the school. 5. Identify, engage and manage the outside vendors who perform web design, development, and maintenance. As needed, request quotes for the SOM website and other new media articulating project goals, scope and specifications in order to obtain competitive bids from vendors as required by Yale University. Manage budgets including contracts with internal and external vendors. 6. Lead the school’s editorial development on social media. Translate the school’s mission and messages into social media form, while coordinating with news and editorial production. Drive increasing engagement across audiences and potential contributors. Make strategic recommendations about new campaigns to pursue and new platforms to Engage with the broader Yale University to raise the school’s prominence. Through social media strategy, attendance at university-wide events, and sharing of experience and best practices serve as a role model for Yale communications. Advance recognition within the University that SOM is a leader in many aspects of Advance the digital half of the school’s disseminated content production approach. Help develop strategies, policies, and practices to move us from an ad hoc approach to a more systematic, unified, and refined approach. Produce an online style guide, tutorials, and other materials to enable individual department content editors to produce high-quality webpages. Disseminate best practices. Assess needs of departments and groups9. Working with Communications, IT, Development and Alumni Relations, the Career Development Office, Student and Academic Services, other administrative teams at Yale SOM, and outside vendors, develop innovative, interactive online content. Maintain an institution-wide perspective on all web content to ensure excellence, effectiveness, and consistency. 10. Identify areas for editorial content and graphic content improvement. Initiate projects and create teams to establish and encourage use of standardized Special projects and other related duties as required.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Journalism or related field and three years of experience.
Required Skill / Ability 1 :
Consumer-facing background is required.
Required Skill / Ability 2 :
Demonstrated and proven writing skill in the health, wellness and / or science genre with a preference for experience in an academic environment. Proven success in delivering top-notch text content, taking stories from conception to completion demonstrating exceptional writing and editing skills.
Required Skill / Ability 3 :
Ability to foster creativity and ideation across teams and among peers and subordinates. Desire to work collaboratively in an open, friendly manner. Superior organizational and time management skills demonstrating a high degree of resourcefulness.
Required Skill / Ability 4 :
Fluency in digital content publishing : CMS platforms, SEO, tagging, keywording, etc., as well as in native programming for all key social platforms. Ability to deliver against a defined set of metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs).
Required Skill / Ability 5 :
Demonstrate a deep roster of freelance writers, editors and copy editors to call upon. Proven ability with shaping and growing talent; a hands-on approach to leading by example. Must be willing and able to work occasional off-hours in nights and weekends, as deadlines and breaking news dictate.
Preferred Licenses or Certifications :
Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of editorial experience in a digital newsroom environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
