Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office is actively recruiting to create a pool of diverse candidates eligible for current and future regular, full-time certified Deputy vacancies in our Enforcement (Patrol) Division.
 
Enforcement Deputies patrol county roads and residential and business areas, as well as waterways, to enforce local and state laws, investigate traffic accidents, and investigate crimes and complaints relating to criminal law enforcement in the County.
  
Positions require work in a 24-hour per day, 7-day a week environment with shift rotation in 8-hour, 10-hour, or 12-hour shifts depending on assignment. May be required to work with rotating shift schedules including working day, swing, and night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required. 
  
These positions are represented through Teamsters Local 223. Incentive pay is available for education, certification, and bilingual speakers. Assignment pay is available for detectives, corporals, full-time field training officers, and canine handlers.
  
These positions carry an 12-month probationary period.

SKILLS TESTING EQUIVALENCIES FOR CERTIFIED APPLICANTS  

Certified applicants must meet ONE of the following academic proficiencies equivalencies in order to waive the POST exam requirement:

  • In-state candidates must have possession of a current and valid Basic Police certification from Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) and successful completion of an agency FTEP program;
OR

  • Out-of-state candidates must possess a current and valid Basic Police equivalent certification, successful completion of an agency FTEP program, and
  • a minimum of three years’ certified law enforcement experience in the relevant discipline ; OR
  • a four-year, post-secondary degree issued by an accredited, degree-granting college or university recognized by the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization under the provisions of ORS 348-604.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a minimum of a current and valid Basic Police Certification, issued by Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) or equivalent local, state, or federal certification, and successful completion of an agency Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) program. DPSST maintains authority to determine acceptable certified transfer of out-of-state certification to Oregon. 

Ability to secure and maintain a driver’s license valid in the state of Oregon. Will be required to drive a County vehicle. Employees authorized to operate a private vehicle on County business are required to carry a valid driver’s license and liability insurance minimums as outlined in ORS 806.070.
 
Applicants will be required to pass a medical exam and/or psychological evaluation prior to appointment in order to meet standard under OAR 259-008-0010.
 
Will be subject to successful completion of a personal background check including, but not limited to, criminal, civil, driving, military, educational, and employment history pursuant to OAR 259-008-0015.
 
This position carries a 12-month probationary period.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The incumbent typically performs shift-work with periodic change in shifts; working alone in isolated geographic areas in all types of weather and conditions, and often in confined spaces. The noise level in the work environment varies depending on the situation. Work involves stress of working with detainees. The incumbent will likely encounter frequent interruptions throughout the work day.

The employee is regularly required to possess the strength and stamina to sit for long periods of time in a patrol vehicle and to enter and exit the vehicle quickly and frequently; and to possess the strength, stamina, coordination, and balance to stand and walk for long periods; to walk and run on uneven surfaces; to bend and reach to conduct inspections/investigations; to climb ladders, fences, and other obstacles; to run in pursuit of individuals; to physically restrain uncooperative and violent individuals, and to carry equipment and supplies. 
Must be able to meet all requirements as designated in the job task analysis of a police officer on file with DPSST.
