Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office is actively recruiting to create a pool of diverse (Internal Only) candidates eligible for current and future regular, full-time Deputy vacancies in our Corrections (Jail) Division.

Corrections Deputies perform work in the care of adults in custody in the Yamhill County Correctional Facility. Duties include maintaining the supervision, safety, security, and sanitation of adults in custody confined in the correctional facility; escorting and transporting adults in custody within the facility, to other agencies, and any other appointments as necessary; controlling public movement within the correctional facility; and other duties as assigned.

Positions require work in a 24-hour per day, 7-day a week environment with shift rotation in 8-hour, 10-hour, or 12-hour shifts depending on assignment. May be required to work with rotating shift schedules including working day, swing, and night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
 
These positions are represented through Teamsters Local 223. Incentive pay is available for education, certification, and bilingual Spanish speakers.
 
These positions carry an 18-month probationary period.

ORPAT INFORMATION

All ENTRY-LEVEL candidates must provide ORPAT physical ability test results, dated within the previous 12 months, submitted by the closing date (05/01/2025). You may provide this as follows:
  • Interested candidates may submit their ORPAT scores through NTN as part of their testing; or
  • Interested candidates may upload their ORPAT scores, on testing agency letterhead, as part of their NEOGOV application.
Passing scores are 6:20 or under, with a pass on the Dummy Drag.

SKILLS TESTING EQUIVALENCIES FOR CERTIFIED APPLICANTS  

Individuals who hold certification in a discipline other than Corrections must submit the following as part of their initial application in order to waive the NTN and ORPAT exam requirements:

  • Letter of interest - no more than two pages that outlines the applicant’s education, training, and demonstrated abilities for the position. The letter should also specify the actions taken by the individual to prepare for the transfer/new assignment.

  • Reports - two reports written within the last 12 months in the individual’s current assignment..

NEXT STEPS

Qualified applicants, those who achieve passing NTN Frontline A test scores (70% or greater on each individual section) and achieve passing ORPAT times (6:20 or under, with a pass on the Dummy Drag), as well as meet all other minimum requirements, may be invited to participate in Oral Board Panel Interviews on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

Candidates selected to move forward after interviews will be required to complete the remaining steps, coordinated through Yamhill County Sheriff's Office, as outlined at https://www.yamhillcounty.gov/699/Join-The-Team.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The Qualifications 

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess: United States citizenship or have the ability to obtain citizenship within one (1) year of hire; an unrestricted state-issued driver’s license with the ability to obtain an Oregon driver’s license; a good driving record; and a satisfactory work record and personal history (e.g., free of criminal convictions, although special circumstances may be considered). A high school diploma/GED is required. Must be able to be certified by DPSST within timeline established by OAR 259-0080060. 

May be required to drive a County vehicle. Employees authorized to operate a private vehicle on County business are required to carry a valid driver’s license and liability insurance minimums as outlined in ORS 806.070.  
   
Applicants will be required to pass a medical exam and/or psychological evaluation prior to appointment in order to meet standard under OAR 259-008-0010.  
   
Will be subject to successful completion of a personal background check including, but not limited to, criminal, civil, driving, military, educational, and employment history pursuant to OAR 259-008-0015.  
   
This position carries a 18-month probationary period.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The incumbent typically works in an institutional environment and uses a two-way radio, computer, telephone, and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an institution and includes exposure to alarms, sirens, and voice conversations. Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the workday.

The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend, climb stairs, or lift up to 60 pounds. Often demands restraining, escorting, and/or carrying inmates weighing between 100 to 250 pounds. May also require running and apprehending and physically restraining uncooperative and violent individuals. Requires time-sensitive physical reaction appropriate to the circumstances under stressful conditions. Must be able to meet all requirements as designated in the job task analysis of a corrections officer on file with DPSST.
