Title: Elementary Library Assistant
Job Description: The library assistant is responsible for the organization, circulation, and maintenance of the elementary library. The assistant is also responsible for research assistance to faculty and students and other related duties as assigned by the building principal.
Criteria:
A. Education Level: High School diploma, preference given to those with two years post high school education or higher.
B. Experience Desired: Desire to work with elementary aged children, experience with procedures desirable but not required.
C. Physical Requirements: Constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination, hearing; intermittent filing, grasping, and walking. Frequent balancing, bending over, carrying, climbing, crouching, holding, indexing, inserting, lifting, sitting, stamping, standing, stooping, talking, turning, writing. Also frequent repetitive motion of wrists, hands, fingers.
D. Other Requirements: The ability to work with frequent interruptions.
Essential Functions and Duties:
1. Performs routine descriptive cataloging and coding of library materials in all formats.
2. Inputs and updates data in online databases, or supervises filing and maintenance of cards in card catalog.
3. Provides general information about library services and facilities.
4. Helps patrons in the use of public access catalog, library computer systems, and multimedia equipment.
5. Answers routine inquiries using standard bibliographic materials and/or computer data systems, and refers those requiring professional assistance to librarian.
6. Assists with collection development by recommending titles to acquisition librarian.
7. Searches standard print and online sources to verify bibliographic information on order requests.
8. Maintains databases and prepares information and statistical data for reports and special studies.
9. Designs and prepares exhibits of library materials.
10. Produces handouts and instructional materials.
11. Assists in developing bibliographies, databases, and Web pages

Receives Guidance From: Principal, Teachers, Middle School Librarian
Working Conditions:
A. Both Indoor and Outdoor
B. Climatic Environment and Hazards: Occasionally subjected to outside/cold below 32 degrees. Occasionally subjected to heat above 100 degrees. Normal classroom/library environment.
C. Hazards: Exposure to communicable diseases.
